Default Mini computer - 07-15-2010, 09:00 PM

I picked up a Dell Mini 10 from Craig's list a couple months ago. has been great for checking email, web brousing and VERY small and light. got the smaller battery, but it lasts 4 or 5 hours using it on wifi. they do have a few drawbacks, no cd drive, but with jump drives and external drives cheap that's no problem.

BT

It's so sad that work interfers with diving!!

Default Quick review - 07-29-2010, 11:15 AM

Bought the $199 Acer and took it to Mexico. Everything worked well and it readily picked up Wifi connections. Battery lasts a long time and computer starts quickly. Very lightweight. Loaded with Skype, it half paid for itself already in the calls home last week. I was glad to see the charger plug is two prong, which is the standard in Mexico.

Biggest drawbacks so far is the speakers suck and the headphone output is low power. The two USB ports on the left side are too close to get two USB flash drives in there cleanly. The small 10.1" screen means more scrolling but the touchpad has a feature called Gestures where if you run two fingers up and down on the pad the display scrolls up and down (and similar for horizontal).

I wouldn't use it as an everyday computer or if I traveled on business a lot and needed to spend hours with office apps. For a vacation travel computer to entertain myself on the plane, upload and review photos, and other light stuff it is a great computer.

Viz was awful and the diving sucked.

We dived Palancar Caves, Santa Rosa wall, Paseo de Cedral wall, Paradise, Tormentos, and some shore dives off Villablanca. Dos Ojos and Bat Cave cenotes on the mainland. And a whale shark snorkel. Awesome diving.

I spoke with Pablo the night we arrived, he wasn't able to DM for us because he was headed to Mexico D.F. the next day for his daughter's First Communion.

Back on the topic of cheap computers - Mystery's laptop was stolen while we were in Mexico (along with my Nitek Duo, grrrrr) - need a quick replacement, cheap - any recommendations? Would need to be a notebook rather than a netbook as would need to run Office apps, pics, studenty stuff.

In the beginning was the word. And the word was "aaaaarrrr"

When I was looking I liked the Acer 553x or 554x series for low price and decent power. Could be had for about $350. I may still get one anyway.

I have been all over the world and have been fortunate to never have anything stolen from a hotel room or lost permanently by an airline. I guess I'm lucky. And I have stayed in some cheap places. I guess they can steal from all-inclusive resorts too.
