Advice for a DM candidate

I have started my DM training and while Ive just seen Legobloxs go through his training I realize there are various routes to this certification. Some may offer more experience with certified divers whilst others may have more with new divers just starting their journey into the great world of diving.
I know we have many DM's on this site some with many years experience and others only starting out on that journey but I'd be interested in hearing what your best bit of advice to a DM candidate would be and also why you decided to become a DM.
Im sure there are many interesting stories out there and Id love to hear them.

Focus on the new divers starting out. Assist instructors in Open Water courses. Once you can understand and manage new diver students you can easily transition to working with experienced divers in more advanced courses or leading certified divers as a guide.

I agree with RH. I got my DM for two reasons - the experience and to lead certified divers. The experience in both the book education (which yes, I do know one can obtain in other courses as well) and the opportunity to see all aspects of the dive op including working with students. While I enjoyed my time working with students, I validated my assumption that I would not want to do that exclusively/extensively. My time working with classes and guiding newly certified divers did help though, as the problems are the same ones you will encounter with certified divers, and you learn to notice them sooner and address them quicker.

I'd work with students more first and see how it goes. Easy to later transition to more of a guide focused role or assist with advanced level courses.

Thanks guys, as I am doing it with texan scuba so I will be working with open water classes and to be honest it's way I wanted to do it. Seeing a lot of new divers this year get certified made me realize that I wanted to help in this area. Never really saw myself as that person but diving has been such an amazing experience for me that if I can help others on the journey it makes me feel I'm at least giving something back.
