Coastal Expo - Volunteers Needed

Discussion in 'CHUM Gives' started by Waterproof, Apr 4, 2012.

In case you didn't get the email from the FGBNMS, volunteers are needed for the Coastal Expo. Please see the message from Shelly (FGBNMS representative) below.

Greetings Flower Garden Banks NMS friends!

Is anyone interested in helping out with a sanctuary booth at the 2012
Coastal Expo, sponsored and coordinated by Texas General Land Office
(GLO)? The date conflicts with a youth summit the sanctuary education
team is coordinating, so it will require our volunteers to take full
responsibility for the Sanctuary's Coastal Expo booth if we do it.

    Here are some details.....

    Date: June 9, 2012 - Saturday
    Event Hours: 10 am - 4 pm
    Set up Times:
    June 8, Friday 5 - 7 pm OR
June 9, Sat starting as early as 7:30 am (but no later than 9 am)
    Break down: immediately following event
Lunch: Moody Gardens will have food vendors in the Coastal Expo area
for you to purchase lunch if you don't want to bring your own. GLO is
working on getting a free hot dog lunch provided for vendors (that's
us!) but have not finalized those details yet.
    Parking: free

What I need to know from our volunteers before I commit to exhibiting
    at the Expo:

Task 1: If I can get a pop-up tent, table, table top display,
hand-outs and two chairs to you the week before can you make sure it
gets set up either on Friday evening or early Saturday morning for the
    Expo?

Task(s) 2: Can you commit to a 3-1/2 or 4 hour shift working the
exhibit? Please indicate morning (9:30 am - 1:00 or 1:30 pm) or
afternoon (12:30 - 4 or 4:30 pm) Just need to talk about the sanctuary
in general, hand out information, invite people to sign up for one or
more of our list-serves, and provide Kelly or my contact information
to anyone who has questions you can't answer. Would be best to have
folks who have been to some of our talks, or diving in the sanctuary
for this, but if you are a total newbie and want to help out, I will
try to team you up with our more experienced booth volunteers.

Task 3: Break down booth, take the tent, table, display, left over
hand outs and chairs with you so I can arrange to retrieve it sometime
    the following week.

I know this is asking a lot! Hope enough of you can help us out to
make this booth happen. Most of the folks attending this expo will
not have heard of Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary before
and we'd like to take advantage of that to expand public awareness of
the sanctuary and Gulf of Mexico.

For more information, or to volunteer, contact me at
Shelley.DuPuy@noaa or 409-621-5151 ext 106 (will probably have to
leave a voice mail as I will be out of office for next week or so ---
but will check my email and voice messages)

    Hi Waterproof,

I can help out. I don't think I can make home in time to help out with the set-up Friday evening. However, if you need a newbie, let me know. I can be available Saturday for either shifts. Just let me know which shift I'm needed. I'm fairly flexible and love volunteer work.
