This is it! the trip I've wanted to take with you chummers since you first started asking about the diving in Canada.

    Where:
God's Pocket Resort in beautiful British Columbia, Canada.

    When:
June 23rd to July 1st, 2018 (I know that seems like a ways off, but this place books up years in advance)

    How:
June 23 Flight to Victoria, BC
June 24 checkout-dive at Ogden Point (and arrange gear rental for the week)
June 25 drive to Port Hardy, BC and take boat to God's Pocket
June 26,27,29,29 Diving, and diving, and diving (and hiking/kayaking/whale watching/...)
June 30 Boat to Port Hardy, and drive back to Victoria, BC
    July 1 Fly home
(the dates outside of June 25-30 are flexible)

    How much:
Food/Lodging/Tanks/Diving at God's Pocket (paid directly to CHUM by cheque* or paypal)
    • $500 ($514.80 through Paypal) deposit to reserve your spot due now (+ non members must purchase membership)
    • $1100 remainder due March 2018**
    Hotels/Flights/Transportation (arranged/paid individually)
    • $500 flights to Victoria, BC
    • $200 hotels in Victoria, BC
    • $200 transportation to Port Hardy
That means you'll get the diving experience of a lifetime for about $2500 give or take a few hundred based on how much you enjoy your time in Victoria ;)

    Why:
Well, this local photographer can explain it better than I can. The life underwater is so beautiful, so alien, and so unlike any other diving I've done.

    Is it cold?
Yes, but that's what a drysuit is for. It should also be quite pleasant at the surface so you'll get a chance to warm up between dives.

    Drysuit?
Some people do dive here in 7mm wetsuits, but it's much more enjoyable in a drysuit. I will try to arrange for a PADI drysuit class next winter if anyone's interested, and there are stores that will rent drysuits for about $100/week if you're certified.

    Is it difficult?
Aside from getting used to the buoyancy of a drysuit, the diving requires roughly the same level as a Flower Gardens trip. Something around an advanced open water certification.

    When can I sign up?
    NOW!

    Who's Going?
    Diving Doug (Deposit paid)
    Seaagg05 (Deposit paid)
    GWGDWN (Deposit paid)
    wanderwoman (Deposit paid)
    Sushi Boy (Deposit paid)

    *Canadian for check
**The total is $2118.95 CDN, so the final value in USD will depend on the exchange rate at the time. If we get a full boat (12), it goes down to $1695.16 CAD

Very tempting, but I'd need to sort out my exposure protection. When you say cold, what are typical water temps that time of year?

This will definitely be the coolest trip CHUM's ever done!

Surface water temperatures can be around 60, and once you start going deep it can get to 45 even in summer (it's the cold upwelling from the deep that leads to so much life).

The good thing about a drysuit though is you can wear as much underneath it as you need to be comfortable.

YAY! That means the trip's a go :D

Now lets try to convince others to come because the more the merrier.

BC is on my list, but as usual CHUM has hacked my calendar and picked dates I already have booked, we'll be sailing and diving deep inside the arctic.
    2021 anyone?

Ok, put my name on the list too.

I've been wanting to go here since I heard about it, so I can't pass up this opportunity. A rental drysuit's a good backup plan if I don't get mine sussed out.

I don't know, it's always better to wait until the cheque clears if it's coming from an author ;)
