Flower Gardens Marine Sanctuary looking for volunteers

NOAA Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary staff is kicking off 2013 with a stronger focus on its volunteer program. While there will still be the occasional event where you can volunteer on a 'once or twice a year' basis, our goal this year is to begin building a corps of volunteers who can contribute an average of 4 to 5 hours or more every month.

Some of the positions require little or no training, while others require a significant time commitment for training. All positions will involve working with minimal supervision at our NOAA facility and/or going offsite to represent Flower Garden Banks NMS at other venues, such as school classrooms, local libraries, aquariums, and museums. Some positions are 'behind the scenes' while others are in the spotlight as presenters, activity leaders and/or community event staff. All of them will require a background check and clearance from the NOAA Office of Security before we can bring the volunteer fully on board.

Because background checks cost money, budget considerations limit how many new volunteers we can bring on board each year. As part of our 2013 focus, we are also partnering with our sister agency, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service - Galveston laboratory to provide cross-training for a couple of the positions.

Call for Applications - Volunteer Positions

The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) offices in Galveston, Texas have several openings for volunteers. A limited number of positions are available at Flower Garden Banks National
Marine Sanctuary and at National Marine Fisheries Service.

There are TWO (2) parts to the application. Both parts are due by 5 pm Central Standard Time on Friday, January 25, 2013. Because they contain personally identifiable information, completed applications
cannot be emailed. They must be faxed, mailed or personally delivered.

Application materials are available on the Flower Garden Banks NMS website at http://flowergarden.noaa.gov/opportunities/volunteers.html
