Happy New Year!

The club's Dive A Month (DAM) challenge enters its twelfth year! It's a challenge in our club to dive once a month for the entire year. The goal is to encourage more diving! It's a great program and a fun way to stay in the water all year.

So - who's up for a dozen dives, this dozenth challenge year?

DAM Rules
The only requirement to enter is that you must be a Tiger Shark (paid CHUM member) when you start and when you complete the challenge.

As you complete your dive each month, just report back here on this thread and let us know. No need to “register” or even reply saying that you want to do the challenge. Just make sure your dues are paid up and post below in this thread when you’ve done your January dive (and each month after, as well). Even though we’re pirates, we run this program on the honor system. Feel free to add a few details and post pictures in the Media Gallery too - we'd love to know what you were up to. It's a great way for us all to share in your success.

Your dive doesn't have to be part of a CHUM outing - although those are always the most fun. You can dive (almost) anywhere and with anyone as long as you dive once a month. Heck, you don't even have to live in Houston to participate. We've had folks take part in the challenge from as far away as the Great Lakes.

CHUM will try to provide dive outings but that may not be possible in all months. We encourage everyone to use the Dive Buddy Board anytime you want to get wet.

Dives should be 'open water' or large aquariums with exceptional dive sites (i.e. NBL) subject to Board approval. That’s where the “almost anywhere” comes in. No swimming pool or hot tub dives. We do not want to exclude any worthy diving but we want DAM CHUMmer to be an accomplishment.

If you can't do it every single year, not a problem! The years that you dive do not have to be consecutive. If you were a DAM CHUMMER one year, then took a year off, and then do it for a second year, you'll earn the second year swag.

DAM Booty
In addition to bragging rights, you'll earn some cool stuff. Specific brands and styles depend upon the vendors at time of ordering, but below is the current award schedule.

Year 1, you'll earn a DAM CHUMMER patch.

Year 2, you'll earn a DAM CHUMMER hat or visor with the DAM CHUMMER logo embroidered on it.

Year 3, you'll earn a DAM CHUMMER polo shirt with the DAM CHUMMER logo embroidered on the front, the Texas dive flag embroidered on the back of the collar, and your screen name embroidered on the sleeve. They are Port Authority Rapid Dry Polos, with a 60/40 cotton/poly blend and are available in either a Unisex or Ladies version. You'll have your choice of any of the available colors - here's an example of the Unisex polo in khaki.

Year 4, you'll earn a DAM CHUMMER microfiber towel embroidered with the DAM CHUMMER logo and your screen name.

Year 5, you'll earn a jacket embroidered with a DAM CHUMMER logo and your screen name.

Year 7, you'll earn a specially designed T-shirt. The front artwork is the DAM CHUMmer logo. The back features a scuba flag and month name arranged in a circle, with performance year and username inside.

Year 8, you’ll earn a stainless steel coffee mug with a carabiner handle. DAM 12 logo on one side, your username on the other side.

Year 9, you’ll earn a DAM CHUMmer embroidered overnight bag.

Year 10 is a milestone year. You'll earn your choice of an etched glass DAM CHUMmer decanter set or an etched glass DAM CHUMmer iced tea set.

Each person who successfully completes the challenge will also be forever memorialized on the DAM CHUMmer perpetual plaque in our Recognition forum.

Please note, there will be no substitutions for awards. The Board puts a lot of time and effort into producing the awards for those who earn them. Please help keep the workload somewhat manageable by selecting from the choices available.

Also, we'll do our best to provide items similar to the ones mentioned above but cannot guarantee exact brands or styles. We'll do our best but at the end of the day, it all depends on what's available when it comes time to place the order.

For year 11 and beyond, the awards reset. Year 11 will earn the year 1 award. Year 12 will earn the year 2 award. Etc. Really after 10 years, it’s probably time for a replacement shirt, a replacement cap, and so on. When the time comes to consider the year 20 awards, the BOD at that time can determine if there will be a different special award for those who have earned that. Maybe a gift certificate for some therapy would be appropriate. :p

Also, for those who can't quite swing diving for 12 consecutive months, we have “DAM Close” (diving 11 of the 12 months) and “Still DAM Good” (diving 10 of the 12 months). While you won't have earned any swag, you will earn recognition at our January meeting.

We already have an opportunity for you to get your January dive in - Spring Lake in Jan. Alternatively, start a thread in the Dive Buddy Board suggesting a time and place that suits you.

Are you up for the challenge of DAM CHUMmers ’24? If so, get those dues paid and let us know once you’ve done your January dive. Let’s get with the DAM program!

In TRUE Siren style, 24% and I dove twice today in St. Lucia making our JANUARY dive a SIREN SLIDE!!!! I can't promise we will make the whole year, but for now, we are in the running for being a DAM CHUMMER 2024!!!

I know we have been absent these last 4 weeks. We have one week left to our incredible St. Lucian experience. We truly feel like we've saved the best for last - DIVING - which kills me to stay because our adventures have been far beyond our wildest expectations...but you all know that diving is one of our true passions. I sooooo wish you all could be diving with us over these next few days. Our 2 dives today were PHENOMENAL!!!

Our first dive site was SUPERMAN for 60 minutes, max depth 58'. Our 2nd dive was at Devil's Hole for 62 minutes max depth 72'. We saw SOOOOOOO many amazing things!!!!!!! I guess I will be writing up a dive trip report when we return. If any of you ever want to experience St. Lucia, we've got some great tips. :)

Dive Moody Gardens South Pacific exibit with Manta rider on January 7 at 0855.
It was a scub dive was down 50 minuets.
I led two orientation dives in the Caribbean exhibit on January 21 and was the unconscious diver for the rescue drill between the two orientation dives, first dive was 33 minutes and the second was only 10 minutes. we had to egress from the exhibit for feeding time
