Hi, I'm Christa. I'm a newbie, both to diving and to Houston. I was born and raised in Michigan and just finished school this past May. I moved to Houston to work in public accounting (it's not as boring as it sounds). I love the water!!! I hope to meet many new friends (including dive buddies!), and to enjoy fun and safe diving adventures.

Hi, I'm Amanda!

I chose the name Blenny, because they are one of my favorite little fish to look at when I get bored with everything else...not that everthing else is that boring at all. My favorite cold water sea creature is the Sea Hare of Southern California, whose mating and egg-laying behavior is quite bizarre.

I grew up in Southern California, outside of L.A. I had a boyfriend who took me diving (almost a dangerous predicament) off of Redondo, and I was instantly hooked, so I decided SCUBA lessons were in order. California Polytechnic University (Cal Poly, Pomona) offered lessons, so I enrolled there, became a NAUI Master Diver two years later, and a NAUI Divemaster the following year, 2002. During this time, I dove in So. Cal, Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, and once in Hawaii. I was a volunteer diver at the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific and enjoyed feeding the fish there. I even met my husband, Jason, in SCUBA class!

After graduating with a degree in Philosophy, I became a PADI SCUBA instructor, and in Sept. 2002, moved to St. Thomas, USVI, where I taught and DM'ed. Under the water was much better than above on the island (I am a little bit of a city girl), and my husband talked me into moving to Florida to get a 2nd degree in Ocean Engineering, while he continued on from Civil to Ocean Engineering. I taught SCUBA in FL, converted back to NAUI as well, and eventually stopped teaching to finish my B.S. in May 2007. Now I am back to being a NAUI Master Diver, here in Houston. I work at Technip USA, an oil service company, where I do mostly structural analysis on Subsea Structures for Gulf of Mexico projects.

It was during a graduation trip to Costa Rica this past May that I met some of you at the Hotel Ocotal...at the pool bar. We didn't dive there, but it looked like you guys were having fun and everyone was really cool. When I found out y'all were from a dive club in Houston I was stoked...me about to move here and all.

Thanks for inviting me to join the club. Hope to see everyone at the upcoming August meeting!

Thanks a bunch! I'm sorry I missed the first club meeting due to the storm (we need to get new tires for the car before driving in heavy rain). I'm bummed I have to wait another month for the next meeting :(

You don't come up with something... bowling, pool, sushi, just drinking, or just about anything else and post it in the Where chum plays forum... You should get some people out to have fun, :D

Yah... what Blackhawk said, except it should probably read "You don't have to wait for anyone to come up with something - if there's something you'd like to get a group together to do, post it in the where CHUM plays forum...." We love to dive, but we also love social events!

Ya, I kinda understood what Blackhawk was saying:eek: I don't know what's fun to do yet in West Houston, except going to the Alamo Drafthouse when there happens to be a good movie playing..like The Simpsons. I'll keep an eye out for the bar nights and stuff I've seen y'all post. Or if I can think of a good get-together thing, I'll post it. Thanks!

Checking in

Hi there, just found this site by seeing a link to it on scubaboard forum. Do not remember who posted the link but they probably do. I have been diving since around 2002, have probably over 100 dives, to many in the Blue Lagoon. I am a paramedic by trade for Cypress Creek EMS up on the far north side of the county. I love to cook and scuba dive. I am the only one in my family that dives so I am always on the look out for a dive buddy. I also teach at a local college in the EMS program. I was sad to see the monthly meeting is on a Thursday, if I am not working my real job I teach on thursdays. But I might skip class sometimes. Can someone please tell me where the Stags Head is please?

Hello from up north!

Hi, all. Hope you'll forgive me for being from Dallas, but since I'm a forum junkie and I couldn't find any very active dive forums in *my* area, I had to horn in here. :)

Anyhow, I'm a newbie--in fact, I'm beginning my PADI Open Water class this coming weekend (just class and pool) with my first open water dive scheduled a couple of weeks from now at the Clear Spring Scuba Park, a mere 20 minutes from my house.

My husband's a firefighter and already open water certified, so I hope this is something we'll enjoy doing together.

I'll probably just lurk for a while, but I thought I'd least introduce myself.

The best place to discuss possible get togethers is to start a thread in the "Where CHUM Plays" forum. A lot of interested people might overlook it in the middle of a "New To CHUM" thread.
