good evening chum-ers. i'm a newcomer to the forums, a regular over in the texas swamp divers forum on scubaboard. i'm a native houstonian, currently attending ut austin. enrolled in the naui divemaster course this fall, i mostly dive around aquarena springs or lake travis. diving the flower gardens for the first time this july! however, i'm looking at adding some more sites to my 'dive around texas' log this weekend: either twin lakes, or 288 lake, or both. i'll try and make it to the pub may 20th and meet y'all. until then, safe diving.

Hi Chummers!

I met some of your members at the Dragon Boat races. Looks like Chum club was the funnest team at the races. I wanted to be a part of it and plan to attend your next meeting.

I got certified in '03. I've been to Cozumel a handful of times. I love the all-inclusive resorts since I'm a drinker with a diving problem. I dove the Comal last summer with my son for the first time and enjoyed the scavenger hunt. I've never had so many extra pairs of sun glasses.

The airfare is too high now to go on the Cozumel trip on May 28th, but I sure am ready for a trip. I just need to dust off the gear and do a practice dive.

Aaarrggg,
Your new dive Buddy

Welcome to CHUM.

We will have lots of local events this year to get out and dive and socialize.

BTW, the airfare to Coz just dropped back down again! $338 plus tax = $440 which is not the all time cheapest rate I've seen but a very good rate especially for a holiday time. It's what I paid months ago before the fares jumped up.

Buddy ~ Welcome to CHUM.
Glad you spotted us at Dragon Boat, its hard to find us since we are such a quiet shy group. ;)

We will be heading to 288 Lake on May 8 to get a little diving and socializing done.
Come out and join us.

Thanks. I just may join the group this weekend. I haven't been there before. Do they rent out tanks or do I need to bring one?

They fill tanks but I don't think they rent them. I can bring an extra one.

Hello, my name is Matt.

I am pretty new to diving as well as to Houston. I have been in Houston for 7 months; moving down here after graduating from SFA where I also received my certification to dive (PADI). I had previous dives up in Washington state but my certification up there fell through. So far I have enjoyed the few dives I have been on and want to pick it back up before I get too rusty.

skilldive ~ Welcome to CHUM.. Glad to have a fellow WA diver in our ranks.
I dove the fabulous waters of Puget Sound for 11 years.. miss those cold dark waters.

You will have lots of opportunities to keep your skills from getting rusty.
You will usually find one or more CHUMmers in a lake or quarry almost every weekend.
Keep an eye out ~ dives are always posted and new members/divers are encouraged to join in.

HI Chummers, I finally decided to check out this board. I have been diving off and on for the past decade, and am a member of scubaboard. I spend most of my time in the Cozumel section wishing I was over there instead of just reading reports. At least I'll be going back in about 33 days. :)

I haven't done much(any) local diving in a long time, but would like to get back into that. It isn't Cozumel, but it is still getting wet. Hope to see some of you soon.

Welcome to CHUM. Definitely get involved with local diving. It's a great place to practice skills so you can maximize your enjoyment on those tropical trips. And it's as much about the topside camaraderie as the diving. Our next local club dive is June 19 at Twin Lakes.

Where are you staying and who are you diving with on your Coz trip? Some of us just got back from Coz and I'll be heading back there July 21.:)

I moved your response and their followup posts to this thread so as to keep this one focused on new member introductions.

All around Newbie

Hello all,

I am an all around Newbie. My wife and I got our certification in July. We fell in love with the sport immediately. We try to go diving locally about twice per month. Deleted to not include email.

A bit about myself... I work in energy finance, and I am currently attending law school part-time. My wife recently completed her AOW and I plan on completing mine soon as well.

I look forward to meeting you all in person.

All the best,

Mike

As Siren said, welcome aboard! =) Hope to see you and your wife at the meeting, but also wanted to take the opportunity to point out we currently have 2 upcoming club dive events scheduled. Both Trashfest and Athens Scuba Park happening in October and would be a great way to meet other club members while logging a few dives!

:)

Don't forget to check out the Buddy Board

Welcome to CHUM, if you are looking for other divers to join you for local diving you may want to post on the Buddy Board. Just a quick post to saying you want to go diving and you will usually find several others looking to do the same.

Welcome aboard. Other folks have given you great info. I would caution against putting your email address in threads. Spambots love to latch onto those

Hope to see you underwater sometime!

Hi All,

I am so new only a few days ago I thought BC was short for a long time ago and reg. was short for Army Regulation! After some reading…well maybe a lot of reading I know better. I hope to start my open water cert very soon this month in fact. I feel pretty good about my certification research but, if you think I might have missed something please send me a pm.

I probably got here backwards form everyone else. I went on a vacation now I want to get certified! lol We took a vacation last spring to the big island of Hawaii. On the second day we went snorkeling. What a blast! By the fourth day my wife stopped asking what I wanted to do for the day because she knew it would be “GO SNORKELING!!â€Â
Hope to see everyone soon!

That's awesome, LiveBait! Welcome to CHUM. Two years ago this week I was in my open water class, not too far off from thinking BC was a time frame, and that being someone's "buddy" was more chummy (haha...couldn't resist) than an actual term. :p

Open water class is a lot of fun! So glad you have gotten bitten by the scuba bug, before even breathing underwater for the first time. You are in for a wild ride.

Come by the meeting this Thursday night at Stag's Head Pub in the loop and introduce yourself. We always have a great time, and there are plenty of people to talk to and beers to drink. arggh! :piratewithhat2:
