Are they actually going to look at our logs? Because it just occurred to me that a lot of my logs aren't signed by my buddy. So I may need to bring my logbook to the next meeting and get you guys to sign your dives with me.

That shouldn't be a problem. Considering mine is digital it is a whole different beast.

I'm still working on converting mine to digital. I'm almost caught up to when I stopped diving 18 years ago. So that really just leaves the last year.

They’re not gonna look at your logbook, but they will look at your skills in the u/w obstacle course.

With the diving you’ve been doing, you should ace that.

For those interested in a class, Caleb would prefer that you just call and register direct. The website shows Nov 9 and 16 available. To register for the DAC, please contact the Spring Lake Diving Coordinator (Caleb) at divecoordinator@txstate.edu or at 512.245.7541.

If you will report back here when you are reserved, I'll keep post #1 updated so we all know who is taking the class on what date. Hopefully, that will allow us to get a group up there a weekend or two.

I am making the date official. Not for potential class members (since it's full), but for already-certified Spring Lake divers to come out, join the group, and do some volunteer diving.

Is anyone else registered that isn't on the list in post #1?

Now that the date is official, I have put it on my calendar, and I'll plan to attend as an already certified volunteer. watermonkee, will you coordinate with the Spring Lake guys for all the CHUM volunteers joining that day?
Who else is in for what is sure to be a fun day of diving?

Nope. Each buddy team should work out their own volunteer time slot with the Spring Lake dive coordinator.

If I remember correctly, the class lasts until late afternoon, so there should be ample time for volunteer divers to put in their time and meet up with everyone after the class.

So is this for a dive after the cert course? If so, I'm in.

Do we need to buddy up for the class? Or do we just all dive together?

In my recollection, there's no need for a specific buddy. The practical skills tests are with the group all in the training area. After that test - if they still do things the same way as when I did the class 4-5 years ago - there's a dive tour of a few sites. Everyone pretty much stays together as a group, but you can have a designated buddy if you want. Again, that was then. I don't know what may have changed. Folks who took the class more recently could chime in on that.

No, if you're in the class, you'll be busy until late afternoon (I think). This is for people who are already cleared to do volunteer task-oriented dives. We usually do those dives in the morning or early afternoon. We'll be doing that while you're busy getting trained.

I'm just trying to get folks in two different groups together since all of us will likely spend Friday night in San Marcos and may be able to meet up after all the Saturday activities are done.

For volunteer divers, Caleb responded to an email I sent last week.
  • The window to reserve volunteer time is not open until 4-5 weeks before the date.
  • The total number of volunteer spots available for the day is 16, with a limit of 8 at one time.

Should we be booking some accommodation round about now? Holiday Inn or something like that? Seems like there are plenty of options along the freeway from $70 to $170 a night. Or does anyone know somewhere that's more interesting, less cookie cutter motel? I'm not familiar with San Marcos.

I booked an Airbnb. Usually a lot more interesting than a regular Hampton inn or Courtyard.
