What a weekend!! Is anyone else exhausted? :p I am so pleased and happy that everyone shrugged off the weather forecast, and decided to brave the Comal weekend together. We did miss out on PegLeg joining us for the day, but we did gain two more CHUMMERS than we originally expected - thanks for joining us ToyZuki and Diver_T. In total, 13 of us Claimed the Comal this year!

24% and I arrived on Thursday and set up the motorhome in campsite 513. We were the only souls around and had the entire riverfront to ourselves. We immediately knew that diving would problematic for anyone since the Comal resembled dirty chocolate milk, however we still held out hope for the Saturday float/CHUM'O'PEDE. The joke became that with the flow of the river, we would be at the last take-out in approximately 30 minutes after entering the water. :p

On Friday morning, another storm blew through New Braunfels, but the skies cleared out pretty quickly...just in time for the storm to hit Houston and the I-10 drive for all our CHUM friends. :( I spent the afternoon cleaning, 24% made the obligatory beer & grocery run. Wanderwoman was the 1st to arrive, just in time to help Douglas unload the groceries. :p We sat and chatted with Wanderwoman for about 45 minutes in the motorhome, and then Heidi Ho knocked on our door. She and Scubagirl had arrived, so we moved outside and began to form our growing Circle'O'CHUM. We set up initially in Wanderwoman's site, since her spot was shaded. We were entertained by the guys in Site 510 whose travel trailer was quite literally on fire. Well...it wasn't THAT dramatic, but there were flames and smoke in the access panel to their water heater. We decided it was best to keep an eye on them. :p A few libations were consumed before heading to dinner at the Phoenix Saloon. It was quite packed! The only seats available were at a table with 2 nice looking people, clearly on a date. They smiled and agreed that the more the merrier, so we became fast friends with Steve & Kate. They turned out to be a fun couple - they were both military, he was a scuba diver, and they told us how they recently were trapeze artists in the circus with video to prove it. Scubagirl even 2-stepped with Steve! Shortly after ordering food, Sushi Boy joined us. I received a quick text that ReefHound and watermonkee had arrived at the campground, but unfortunately, the kitchen had already closed where we were, and they were hungry, so they didn't join us. We hung out at the Saloon laughing and drinking and screaming at eachother over the live band. Scubagirl also made the night of an elderly gentleman who was there by himself - they danced several times together, and his smile made the whole evening worthwhile. Heidi Ho cut it up on the dance floor at the very end, shakin' her groove thing in front of a full house. :D Right as we were about to leave, Earl Grey and Scubaster showed up! We all decided to skip diving, and meet at the campground around 11am for floating. When we got back to the campground, we moved our Circle'O'CHUM over to site 512, since Waterproof hadn't arrived yet, and her spot was still open. We all enjoyed a fairly clear sky and a few more brews, before turning into bed after midnight.

On Saturday morning, Sushi Boy made his annual run for breakfast tacos. After scarfing those down, we hung out around the Circle'O'CHUM talking to the park host, Mark Priest, and his locally famous dog, Bear, until our hotel crew - Heidi Ho, Scubagirl, Earl Grey & Scubaster - made their way to the campground. (side note - check out Mark Priest Photography. His photo will be featured this month in Texas Hilly Country Magazine - he won 1st place!) We walked to get to our tubes and shuttle wrist-bands, filled the coolers, applied the sun-screen, and then finally braved the cool, chocolately waters of the Comal a little bit before noon. The water was chilled, but with the heat of the sun, it somehow balanced out. The sun kept popping in and out of the clouds, and the weather made for a perfect float. It was the 1st time Heidi Ho wasn't shivering by the last take-out. The flow of the river was better than in year's past, but not too fast. The tube chute did kinda kick our arse, though. We had 2 CHUM'O'PEDE virgins - Earl Grey & Scubaster - so after a quick tutorial, we linked up, held on tight, and hoped for the best. The flow through the 1st tube chute definitely was definitely higher, and it didn't become completely evident until we turned the last corner in the chute, and we were staring HUGE RAPIDS in the face. Trying to hold on plunging head first into the rapids, Heidi Ho - the head of the CHUM'O'PEDE - flipped over and was thrown a safety donut from the lifeguard, Wanderwoman flipped over and Sushi Boy's tube zipped right over her; she popped up trying to grab by my tube at least 3 times and kept getting sucked under. I was trying to grasp her arm and keep her above water, and in her other hand, she was holding her shoe and throwing me her sunglasses. haha....she did lose her hat, but all in all, she was quite the trooper. Heidi Ho lost her tube completely, so Sushi Boy wrangled it down in the eddies. I thought it was safe to stand up in the waters after the tube chute, to make sure everyone else was okay, but that turned out to be a stupid decision. I completely underestimated the swirling waters, and very quickly got sucked back towards the raging waters of the tube chute. I couldn't get back in my tube, and I became a lot worried. I looked up and called out for Douglas because I knew I wasn't going to get back to quieter waters alone. I kicked and I kicked but I could not gain ground in those eddys. I held on to my tube for dear life, let myself get picked up in the rapids and just prayed that it would shoot me out the right direction. I got close enough that Douglas could grab my tube and try and pull me to calmer water. I was kicking and kicking, almost lost my shorts trying to swim against the current, and eventually, I literally felt the waters turn, and I could stand. That tube chute was quite intense....fun, but yah...it did get the better of us. I'm sure there are other stories from the back half of the CHUM'O'PEDE, but I do know that Earl Grey and Scubaster made it through successfully on their 1st time. Good for them! The 2nd tube chute was fun, because there was actually enough water flowing that we didn't bottom out. By the 3rd tube chute, we recruited 5 more girls and an additional beer tube, so our CHUM'O'PEDE was 15 people/18 tubes long! It was our most successful yet, as we all stayed together, even with our 5 girl rookies. We made it to the last take-out in tact, nobody was too cold, and we waited...and waited for our shuttle back to Landa. When we got back to the campground, Diver_T was waiting for us around the Circle'O'CHUM. Waterproof and her dog, Shooter, pulled in shortly after, and ToyZuki shortly after that. We put up an EZUp tent for a little bit of shade, and after a round of showers, and a grocery run by Earl Grey & Scubaster, we started our grill-out. Two tables, a grill, a hot plate, an oven, paper plates, paper towels, and silverware combined with hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, all the condiments, jalapeno stuffed pork tenderloin, grilled mushrooms, corn on the cob, potato salad, chips, fresh brownies and warm chocolate chip cookies from the oven equaled very full and happy bellies. We traded a birthday serenade to one of the guys in site 510, for a great group picture with "Wet" and the CHUM Flag. The rest of the evening was spent chatting, drinking, and listening to music, before turning into bed a little earlier than the night before - around 11pm.

Trip Report Continued...

Sunday morning was a bit of a surprise.

I actually woke up at 4am because Shooter's leash was attached to the motorhome ladder, and he was getting restless. A quick check of my phone radar showed me a huge storm that was bowling across Texas. We still had a bit of time before it got to us, but I knew that everyone's stuff was still set up around the Circle'O'Chum, including the dinner tables, and our rugs and awnings outside, and these things wouldn't survive a storm like this. I woke up Douglas, and we went outside to pack everything up, clean up the Circle'O'CHUM, and collapse the chairs so they wouldn't blow away. I woke up Waterproof since she didn't have a rain fly on her tent, and I didn't know if Shooter was scared of storms and there was already quite a bit of lightning. Douglas woke up ReefHound & watermonkee because their windows were down in their vehicle. I walked over to Wanderwoman's tent, and as I got to her door, I thought "why am I waking her up" but luckily I heard her say "hey where are you going"....she was obviously already awake. She poked her head out through the door, and I told her the storm was coming. I felt silly, because as she asked me what should she she expect, all I could say was "rain, thunder, maybe wind" and I realized that she was already way hunkered down and the storm wouldn't have bothered her. So sorry about that Jennifer. :p Douglas and I went back to sleep and the rain finally started to fall around 7am. I awoke the 2nd time to a frantic series of knocks at the front door. Sushi Boy, standing under an umbrella, warned us that we need to get to higher ground. There was a river depth sign down a ways, and he was warned by the maintenance crew, that if that sign disappears under the water, our minutes are numbered to get out of there. At that point, there was still about 4' until the top of the sign, but we figured we better start hustling. The next 15 minutes were a blur. Somehow, a very packed riverfront of campers turned into a desolate road next to a raging river. We quickly got the motorhome in travel mode, luckily ToyZuki (camping in front of us) and Waterproof (behind us) were already packed up, so we threw the motorhome in reverse and Douglas drove off behind the escort of the park host. ToyZuki and I ran over to assist Wanderwoman; ReefHound and watermonkee were almost wrapped up. I stood in the pouring down rain and watched car after car drive off as the water steadily rose in the Comal. I turned around, snapped a few pictures, and drove up to the front office where the rest of CHUM was lined in up in their vehicles, soaking wet, chilled, and ready for breakfast. I sent everyone on to Fork & Spoon for breakfast; Sushi Boy told the hotel gals of our change of plans, and we were all were going meet up there. After a quick change of clothes in the motorhome, which was now parked behind the Landa tube shuttle, Douglas and I drove back down to the campsites to find the park host and thank him, as well as get permission to leave our coach in the parking lot. He laughed and said "I don't think we are renting many tubes today; the river is closed." Douglas and I stared out at the Comal which had now come up at least 5-6 feet; campsites beyond the bathrooms were completely submerged, and the water was beginning to claim the trees along the banks. The lower campground was now deserted, picnic tables stacked on top of one another, electricity was cut off. A moment of silence full of gratitude, and a few more pictures, we drove away to have breakfast with our CHUM friends. We had a nice big table, a very friendly waitress, good sized portions of food, shared a few pictures on our phones, and all breathed a sigh of relief that the weekend was wrapping up, and all in all, quite a success. :)

I can't believe that CHUM has claimed the Comal 11 times! I have been the "Julie" for the last 7 trips, and although this year brought unique conditions, it turned out to be just as fun as all the previous years - and the floating was amongst the best ever. I ALMOST called this thread "The COMAL Claims CHUM" Report, but since we were so swift on our feet, we remain undefeated.

Let us all have a little moment of silence for Sushi Boy, Diver_T, and ToyZuki, whose plans to dive Aquarena Springs on Sunday were squandered with the storms that pummeled the area. And add GWNDWN to your moment, too....he was going to meet them there.

..........

.........
...............

..........

Okay. I hope that our breakfast instead quelled some of the disappointment for the CHUMMERS on our trip, and that Spanky made up for GWNDWN's disappointment. :p

Despite the Sunday weather, what a nice trip and a great group to be with on my first Comal trip. The drive to NB was a little rough at time due to storms in Houston, but Saturday shaped up nicely with mild, warm weather and bits of sun. With the water level up a bit the pace down the river was brisk but we still ended up with a couple hours on the river. After the adventure of the first chute everyone gathered themselves for a leisurely finish. Once we cleaned up, Sushi Boy treated us to some grilling and everyone enjoyed food, beverages and conversation.

Scubaster and I had hoped to play golf on Sunday but it wasn't meant to be (see Siren's comments on the weather above)! While slightly annoying for us, I am glad everyone camping made it out OK. Already up early we headed back to Houston but not before driving through what seemed like 80 miles of storms. Overall a fun trip and looking forward to doing it again.

Can't add much to what's been already said; really was a fun trip. We were so lucky that the weather held out as long as it did - I felt bad for the campers on Sunday morning but Friday night and Saturday all day could not have had better weather.

We moved pretty quickly down the river - although it was not pretty to look at, it was super fun to float on...in spite of all the 'vegetation' and animals. Who knew a cute fuzzy little caterpillar could be the source of such anxiety?? :D

As always, Siren did a great job as julie - thank you so much for everything - and as always, thanks to everyone who came out. It's the people, and their adventurous spirits, who make it such a great weekend.

Til next year....

I ALMOST called this thread "The COMAL Claims CHUM" Report, but since we were so swift on our feet, we remain undefeated.

That is a great line Siren! Congrats on another well-run Comal trip and a great trip report too. If anybody is ever unsure about how to julie a trip, look to Siren's examples for guidance.

More out of laziness than anything, I ended up leaving my tent in the trunk all weekend and just sleeping in my driver's seat instead. It really wasn't that bad and I was pretty glad to not have to deal with wet camping gear when I got home Sunday night. It did feel a little odd unpacking unused camping gear and unused dive gear, but hey, at least my dive gear is packed and ready to go for next time!

Apparently Siren and I were looking at two different signs when watching the river rise. The one I had my eye on disappeared in about 30 minutes and was well underwater by the time we started moving cars to higher ground. Disappointed as I was to not be able to dive on Sunday, having a laugh-filled breakfast with the group more than made up for that.

The drive back on I-10 was pretty brutal. I think I followed the storm from the hill country to Houston, so I was more than ready for a nap by the time I got home!

All in all, a small price to pay for a great Friday evening at the Phoenix Saloon and one of the best Saturdays I've ever had on a Comal trip. And I'm pretty sure none of us are going to forget Sunday morning anytime soon!

Cheers to everyone who came out and made it the fun trip that it was. :cheers I put a few pics in the Gallery. Can't wait to see more!

Hiya, CHUM -

I posted all my pictures in the gallery. Make sure to check to them out, especially the flood ones.

I just wanted to say thank you again for a great weekend. 24% and I don't get to see you much anymore, and it really meant the world to us after so much time away, you all embraced us and made us feel like we have been a part of you all year long. Thank you for that.

Cheers....until we meet again.....

We love seeing you and spending time with you both. Distance and friendship have no correlation whatsoever - you are a part of us all year long :)

The pics are great - thanks. I think I have a few to upload as well - thanks to wanderwoman rescuing my camera from the flood.
