The Museum is having a Collector's Sale on Saturday
Dear Friends of HMCM,
As we set sail into our new home at East River Houston, the Houston Maritime Center & Museum is refining its mission: to tell Houston’s larger story — its origins on Buffalo Bayou, its rise as a global port city, and its enduring connection to the world.
In this process of renewal, we are thoughtfully deaccessioning certain items in our collection that, while extraordinary, no longer align with the evolving narrative of our past, present, and future. Rather than resting in storage, these remarkable works will now have the chance to continue their journey in the hands of collectors who value their beauty, history, and craftsmanship.
A Rare Opportunity for Collectors
Our Collectors’ Sale will feature:
• Over forty model ships, including masterpieces such as Frigate Essex (plank-on-frame), HMY Royal Caroline, S.S. Bohemian (10.7 ft, c. 1900), Sovereign of the Seas, M.S. Cornelius Maersk, and Steam Auxiliary Schooner Yacht Atlantic.
• Over thirty works of maritime art, from Elizabeth Palmer by Samuel F. M. Badger and a dramatic sea battle by Thomas Luny, to large-scale photographs, engravings, and contemporary works such as America’s Port is Houston by Lou Vest.
This offer places Houston among a tradition of distinguished maritime museums — from Mystic Seaport to Los Angeles Maritime Museum — that have carefully curated their collections while supporting future growth.
Your Participation Matters
Every acquisition you make at this sale helps ensure the Museum can:
• Expand exhibitions that connect Houston’s maritime heritage to its economic future.
• Deliver engaging educational programs for students and families.
• Strengthen our role as a cultural bridge along Buffalo Bayou.
