This one hit close to home.

Who here knows the significance of the Ginger Man in the annals of CHUM?

I could be wrong but I'm thinking that's where the founders sat around with beers and sketched out CHUM on a napkin.

So I'm curious, what other names did you guys throw around before you settled on CHUM?

I’ve slept since then, so don’t recall the 2nd or 3rd place suggestions. What I DO remember is, after discussion about starting a club, Jeff Pena told us, “you should call it CHUM - City of Houston Underwater Mariners.” We were all like, “shut up, Jeff, what an awful idea.” (We’d had a few craft beers by that point.)

The next day, Nema called me up and said, “don’t tell Jeff, but CHUM is a pretty good name…”

And that (in my best Paul Harvey voice) is the rest of the story.

My second year on the Board of the Houston Darts Association, 1986, while putting together a two-division Wednesday Urban League inside the Loop 610, I coerced The Ginger Man to put in two teams by telling management if they didn't allow league darts those customers would go somewhere else. Y'all maybe saw me in there, organizing the darters. Eventually the GM joined Rudyard's, the Richmond Arms, the Ale House, Cecil's Pub (now Blythe Spirits), and the Red Lion on Main St. in HDA's Urban Leagues which is still going on. The Black Labrador steadfastly refused to allow dart teams.
