No plate (backplate) necessary on a sidemount rig; the only plates on this type of harness are two small plates where the webbing intersects on the upper and lower back.
Currently, the Razor does not have a way to attach a wing....a wing, not a dromedary bag...which makes diving with steel cylinders pretty much out of the question. I say pretty much, as I do not ever want to underestimate the power of strokery.

They put more info on the UTD store site about the sidemount system. Too bad the lift capacity of the 'Z-Trim Device' (the triangular wing) is only 15 lbs.

15 lbs of lift doen't seem like much. I guess it would be enough to compensate for the weight changes of your tanks (even steel) while diving if you start of neutral. I don't think it would be enough to keep your head comfortable above water if you were with steel tanks. I think they are planning on you adding and removing your tanks while in the water.

These types of harnesses, The Razor and 'Razor clones', are designed for using AL80s. Even with 15 lbs of lift, this sidemount system isn't going to work for the steel cylinders that we use in diving the Florida caves, not to mention the decompression and stage bottles. Lack of sufficient lift was the problem with the older models of the Armadillo Sidemount Harness.

Nice to know that the production models of the UTD Z Harness Trim Device has 20 lbs of lift and the inflator elbow and opv/pull dump have been placed on the inside, towards the diver's back, where it is protected from hitting the overhead.
