Hi, I'm Shannon. New to diving, new to CHUM. Native Houstonian but I've been trying like hell to get outta dodge. I travel whenever, wherever I can and I just returned from my first dive vacation in Bonaire. I'm hooked. I hope to meet some H-town dive enthusiasts soon, and perhaps find some new buddies.

Hi Shannon, welcome to the club, i joined a month ago after moving to Houston. You won't be dissappointed, you came to the right place. When it comes to diving and having fun, these guys got it down.

I've been diving about 10 years and just finished my TDI Adv Nitrox and Deco cert. I'm certified as a PADI instructor (back off you NAUI guys) but don't teach much unless its for friends. I spend most of my diving in the Texas Gulf spearfishing on underwater wrecks. Try to do at least one traveling dive trip a year. Right now nothing yet for 2007 but planning a trip in Galapagos in Jan 2008. Try to get in at least 20 dives a year. I'm on the 2coolfishing.com boards with the same ID, dfriou.

Seems like a really interesting group from what I've read! Looking forward to a happy hour or trip.

Welcome aboard Dfriou!

there's a meeting on Thursday May 17th with a guest speaker (and a few beers) in the Stags Head Bar - maybe you'll make it along and meet some of the group.

cheers,

Hello all! New guy here...I'm from Houston and began diving in 2006. My first big water dive was at Coz. So, I'm a little spoiled. I hit lake Travis after that and was disappointed to say the least...visibility was terrible. I'm going to Coz again May 9th and am going to be looking for places inland to dive. Has anybody been to Athens Scuba Park or Twin Lakes near Manvel?

Hi Phil - Welcome! I dove Athens for the first time last October and it was a great park. Calvin & Shannon are great hosts and very friendly. The park has a ton of underwater attractions; a jet, motorcycles, boats, platforms, etc. There is a full dive shop and camping available as well. Their website is www.athensscubapark.com.

You're right about Lake Travis. The only good thing about that body of water was the freakin' huge catfish. I would like to try TL soon though. Hope to C U in the blue!

Welcome all the new people--especially the lady in the group. We need more of the female perspective to keep these men on their toes.

Hope to see you all tommorrow at the races or at the next meeting.

Dove TL yesterday....Poor visibility. I was told that due to rain that water was murky but they've had clearer days. It doesn't help that the park looks to be turning into a poor man's Splash-town. 'Four-letter-words" (KIDS) all over the place and no parental supervision. I think it'll be a good park as long as you dive during the week and the water isn't churned up.

...tell us about yourself.

37 yo male, originally from Germany. after too much time in the military, I decided to do something more positive for a change and became a scuba instructor. I started diving in 1992 in Greece, was a hardcore recreational diver, with +- 150 dives per year, until I turned pro. Met my wife during my IDC, and we traveled together for a year and a half, before settling back in the US.
I vacationed all over the world, Caribbean, Cuba, Med, Red Sea, Scandinavia (Awesome wrecks) and then worked in the Bahamas, Indonesia and Florida as an instructor and resort manager.

To date 2300+ dives, all recreational, with a few excursions to the darker side. (don't tell the PADI police!) But I believe in my future there is some deeper diving...

Main interests: wrecks, caverns so far, but caves, too.

That's all I have. Sorry, probably more than you asked for, but ask you did!
