Getting back into it

Hi all,

I've been away from scuba for some time, and now that I'm in Houston, I'd like to refresh my training & get back into it. I'm from Calgary, Canada, and am attending grad school at the University of Texas, Health Sciences in Houston. It's a bit too cold & too high altitude for me to dive up north, so I've only been able to dive on vacations. In Calgary, I played underwater hockey to keep up on the skills. I've played a little here in Houston since I arrived last year, but my first year of grad school was rather hectic. Now school is starting to ease off, so I plan to get back swimming. I brought my logbook back with me this time. I started NAUI, then went to PADI advanced.

I look forward to seeing you all at this month's meeting, and even diving with you in the future, after I take a refresher course.

Hi Frostback and welcome to the club. I used to live up in Calgary (for 6 months) and had a lot of fun up there. The Drink and Ceili's were faves...
Used to go diving up at Lake Minniewanka - did my drysuit course up there.

Stick all your winter gear on ebay, you're not going to need it here....

Ready To Get Back In The Water

Hi Everyone,

My husband and I went to our first meeting last Thursday and really had a great time. What a nice group of people!!! It's been longer than I like to admit since my last dive. I've spent the last 19 months getting accustomed to the demands of motherhood ... and the 9 months prior to that pregnant ... so unfortunately, diving had to be shelved for a while. Prior to moving to Houston at the beginning of 2005, I lived in Fort Lauderdale. I worked as an instructor at a high-volume PADI Career Development Center. My husband (also an instructor) and I spent some time traveling around Indonesia working at various dive resorts. After diving on a daily basis and then not diving at all for a few years, I'm certainly ready to get wet again! I think CHUM will be able to help us out with that. Looking forward to meeting more of you soon!
:)

Welcome country woman!

I agree with your attitude toward the cold but the irony is most of the places I want to dive are cold: Scapa flo, the Galapagos, the Gaspe.

Have some Smarties and a Coffee Crisp for me and I'll see you next meeting.

New to the Club

Hi guys, My name is neil and I have lived in Houston for just over 3 years and have been diving for about the same time. Working my way through the certs and should finish the Rescue course next weekend at Blue Lagoon.

Had 2 trips to mexico this year, a full week at Cozumel was just brilliant.

Looking forward to meeting up and doing some diving and open to downing a few cool ones at the socials.

All the best Brits are called Neil is I think the way it works.

Which part are you from Neil ? I am from the NW but lived and worked in Northampton and London for many years. Also have a few years out in Perth W Australia. Just wish I had the sense to dive when I was out there. Never mind, trying to make up for it now.

I'm from Glasgow, been here about 6 years so far. I also spent 9 years in London and some time in Perth, Oz. Was there for about 3 months in '99 - managed to dive Rottnest and Ningaloo while I was there.

I sense some beer drinking in the not too distant...

I did alot of snorkelling out on Rottnest and had a few long weekends at Ningaloo, the diving must have been cool.

Which is your local watering hole ?

I suspect a few of us will be there on Friday and maybe Saturday night...watch the threads...

We'll be diving the tanks at Ocean Corp this weekend, trying on the commercial dive gear and a group of us are off to the Sea of Cortez in August. All the juice is in the upcoming events thread http://www.chumclub.org/forums/showthread.php?t=163

Ahhh, being bought beer, the raison d'etre of the board of directors.... :D

Greetings:

Dove West Texas in early ‘70s then spent 3,000 hours in black water, mostly solo or occasional tender. Now, a humble word smith for elephant construction jobs around the world, always taking gear and a ham radio. Living in Indonesia for several years just ruined me. Now am quite fond of sissy dives that have lots to see and vis to see with - 30’ down, 30’ radius over reef, swim 100 yards to beach to rinse under fresh waterfall, get next tank…

So, back in Missouri City, got tired of waiting for teenage sons to get certified, so have decided to get all the bottom time I can. Hugely underwhelmed with where the dive industry has gone – I flat don’t want people thinking for me. Parrot Head Curmudgeon who is still frosted the den mothers took away my J valves. Very excited to see where Open Revolution rebreather comes to market. Looking for a way to get back into Jacob’s Well again.

Hoping to be a just perverted enough drinker to get accepted here with my diving problem. Hope to meet up and get wet!
