Welcome aboard

Glad you found us. We kid around a lot, but there really are some serious divers on board and can help out with many problems/questions.

I saw on another post that some will be going to Twin Lakes this Saturday and you could meet some of our core there.

Looking forward to meeting you at the next social meeting in July.

New

Hi,
Buck here…..New to diving but been in and around the water most of my life. Started with Red Cross swimming lessons and went all the way to get my WSI (Water Safety Instructor) but that was years ago. I've wanted to dive all my life but it seems the money & time was always needed elsewhere. Now that all the kids are grown and gone (come back and gone again) I seem to be able to do some things I've always wanted to do. Wife does not dive and I'm having trouble getting her in a mask and snorkel. We have a pool that she is in all the time but her face doesn't go underwater. I'll get her there one of these days. She is very supportive of my diving because she sees how much I enjoy it.
I have my own equipment and plan to continue my dive training. I was NAUI OWCertified on May 1, 2005 and have started on my Advanced Certification. I was supposed to take my Advanced Certification at the Flower Gardens but the trip was called at noon the day we were to leave (rough seas). However not all was lost....since I was packed for a weekend of diving, my buddy and I drove the Destin, Florida, hired a DM, and jumped on the Sea Cobra for a 2-tank boat dive in clear water.
I hope to learn from from the club members' experience and look forward to meeting each of you at dive sites and maybe a meeting or two.

Hi all,

I'm newly certified and can't get enough of it. I had done several resort courses before getting certified, but now that I am I really enjoy diving even more and look for every opportunity I can get.

You all seem to have a very active discussion and club and I look forward to meeting many of you.

Oh - and a quick question - how are the rig dives? Are they terribly difficult for a newbie? I keep seeing them advertised her and at other locations and think it sounds fun but wanted to check with some more experienced divers before I signed up for one.

Thanks

Hi Newfin,

welcome aboard!

As for rig dives, they are not too difficult, but there is a current out there that may make it a bit unnerving for a new diver. Going out there with an instructor or divemaster as a buddy is a good way to go on your first rig dive. They are alot of fun and the life on a rig can be incredible...

I would suggest doing starting your advanced and at least your deep dive prior to going. That'll give you a little more experience and training...

Hi Newfin - glad to see you on the board. I'd agree with Chunky that you'd want to look at getting your advance OW done prior to hitting the rigs. A matter of both improving your skills and gaining confidence. Also good is getting together and doing some local dives to gain experience - Twin Lakes may not be that pretty, but you can nail your bouyancy and confidence. After TW, viz in the gulf will seem incredible! There are some of the club members heading there on Monday for a morning dive, so why not nip along, say hi and get wet? Check out the Holiday Weekend thread.

Welcome, welcome! C'mon down to Twin Lakes on Monday 4th! If you can't make it, just keep your fin in here and I am sure there will be plenty more opportunities for you to come diving with us and work on those skills! :D

I'll be heading up your way for my IE next weekend. Well south Dallas anyway. What quarries are up there for open water? They never told us where the open water portion of the exam is going to be....

Introduction

Howdy Y'all,

I wanted to introduce myself. I did the DIR class with Magenta and Dr. Cheap this past weekend and they suggested I come and join you guys (by the way the DIR class was great and I highly reccomend it). Anyway, a little about me, I am a graduate student here at Baylor College of Medicine where I am in the Neuroscience PhD program. I'm starting my 5th year in Houston now. I was born on the east coast but grew up in Tucson, Az. I did my undergrad at the University of Arizona (Go Wildcats!). Most of my dive training was done in the Sea of Cortez (out of San Carlos Mexico). I have done other dives off of California, in Missouri (Bonne Terre), Florida, and some high altitude lake dives in Arizona. I'm trained in PADI OW, AOW, Rescue, Altitude, EFR as well as DAN O2 and DIR fundamentals. I guess that's enough about me for now. I'll try to be at the bar tonight so I can meet some of you in person (look for a guy in a blue hat turned backwards). Later, Big Jon. :)
