Anyway, a little about me, I am a graduate student here at Baylor College of Medicine where I am in the Neuroscience PhD program. I'm starting my 5th year in Houston now.

Hey do you know Anand C. over in the Mike's lab? I did 4 years at BCM myself and graduate with my master's last year. Anand was my roommate for about 3 of those years. He mentioned someone in neuro with him was a diver as well...

Hello, New to Chum

First a thanks to Discover Scuba for pointing this site out to me; it is great. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks now just catching up on the threads. Sorry I wasn't able to make the last meeting, I was in DAN 02 training. Now a bit about me.

I received my OW back in June of '04 and I have only managed to dive in the Houston Triangle since then, as well as completing a Rescue Diver course, DAN02, and I’m starting Nitrox next week. I also sold a kidney and have my own gear now too.

I love being in the water, grew up on it my whole life. The first time I went diving I felt like I had died and gone to heaven.

I was going to be doing a lot more diving this year but my lovely wife is carrying our first child so my budget and calendar have changed a bit. That said I do have permission for some local dives like Rig’s or the Flower Gardens, now I just need to squeeze it into my schedule.

My wife dives so I’m always keeping an eye open for a dive buddy; another good reason to have found this site.

Regards,

Stark Angel (aka John DeVeaux)

Hey John, we're a bit lax over here, but a belated hi and welcome to the group. If you fancy a trip into town, we'll be doing video night tonight at the Stag's Head and looks like we have some people at Twin Lakes on Saturday, so come say hi if you get a chance.

Love to Dive in the Yucatan (CENOTES!)

Hi, I was born n raise in H-Town. I currently moved down to Pasadena TX. Certifications are; AAUS scientific diver, Padi Dive master candidate, Naui Master Scuba Diver, Naui Nitrox Diver, Emergency First Responser, Dan 02, NSS-CDS Cavern. I plan to be certified as cave diver in 2006. I would like to finish my training in the Yucatan, diving in the Cenotes. Florida's caves has nothing on the Yucatan Cenotes. In Florida I dove in the Jackson Blue, Morrison Springs, Peacock, Orange Grove, Devil's Ear/Eye and Ginnie Springs Caverns. In the Yucatan I dove in Cenote Temple of Doom, Chuck Mool, Little Brother, Eden, Carwash, Tajmaha and Dos Ojos. Diving in Texas was fun at the begining of my training until I experienced Flordia. It was like a big Moody Gardens to me. I then started diving in the Florida Caverns and I was hooked. Until I dove in the Yucatan Cenotes. I loved the cavern dives more than the offshore dives. Sherrie recommended me to this site.

Welcome to the site. We have a few budding cavern/cave divers in the group so you should find some buddies for the cenotes. I've dived a few of the Yucatan cenotes myself - Chuck Mool, Tajmahal and Dos Ojos from what I remember - awesome stuff.

Sorry, I already talked a free beer out of the Prez.

Please put up a quick reply to this thread telling us a little about yourself. If there's anything specific you're hoping to get out of the club, let us know (except for free beer, you're on your own there ;) ).

My name is Todd. I got PADI OW in 1994 and SSI AOW in 1998, but was mainly a one-week-a-year "resort diver" until this year, when I decided to become a local diver and bring my experience up to my certs. Book learning and training dives are great, but there's nothing like practice, practice, and more practice.

What am I looking to get out the club besides free beer? Well, meeting lots of new and interesting people, and an ample supply of dive buddies. I've already been diving with a few of the lucky ones! :D and hope to dive with everyone else soon.

I am orginally from the dallas area. I graduated from University of Texas at Arlington. While I was there I got certified all the way up to Naui Master scuba diver with University Scuba. I was also on thier staff as a dive master candidate for two years. I am now living in Galveston to attend Texas A&M at Galveston. Looking to getting in some diving down here. :)

Newbie!

Hi .... was asked to share a little about myself, so here I go.

I'm a banker, mom, chaperone, cheerleader for kids activities, photographer, wine lover, and.... diver! I actually got my OW, AOW, and a few other certifications back in 1988 and did a fair amount of dives around that time frame. But... haven't been on a dive 15 years or so. Took a refresher class/OW class earlier this year at Gigglin Marlin to try to get reacquainted!

Got to the website via a friend (HTdiver) who I see has not introduced himself yet! Looks like a fun place here.

I am hoping to meet people and get back into the water soon!

New to the board

i recently discovered the CHUM website and have been lurking several days. out of the water, i'm a recovering lawyer who manages an investment firm. i graduated from texas a&m (class of '92) and have lived in houston most of my life. i have been diving since '84 and have recently become addicted to the tech stuff. consequently, i'm spending most of my time in doubles, but have a rec trip planned to the Flower Gardens for 10/1 & 10/2 on the fling - i think that some of the CHUM group will be on that trip as well. anyway, looking forward to meeting you guys and diving/drinking with you as well.

Welcome rkp. If I were you, I wouldn't broadcast our profession too loud around here. Some of our fellow members found out I was a lawyer, now I spend most of my dives guarding my airhoses underwater.

There is a good tech crowd here. Hope to see you at the monthly meeting.

Welcome to rkp and Stargazer

Good to see you on the board. Stargazer - wine lover and diver - you'll fit right in :D

rkp - we've got a bunch of tekkies around now, so you'll fit in too - we promise, your airhoses are safe. :D

OK - My turn

Been here in Houston just about 10 months now and have a desire to get back into diving after a few year hiatus. I have logged about 60-65 dives - mostly in Florida on the Atlantic side. As far as certs, YMCA OW - PADI AOW - TDI Nitrox - GUE DIR Fundamentals (Provisional).

I am a DIR guy (not wanting to start a flame war) and finding like minded folks around here seems difficult. I know Discover Scuba did a DIR-F course back in July. If anyone (I know I spoke to someone on SB) wants to get together for some dives let me know. A 3 year old and grad school might get in the way, but I can make time :)

Thanks to Outback for the warm welcome...

new here

Hi folks,
I'm new to CHUM this week - made it along on Thursday after visiting the Gigglin Marlin and also speaking with Outback.
Seems a good bunch, met a few faces and enjoyed a couple of beers, good guest speaker.

Been diving for 4 years after starting in Scotland in dry suits. Enjoyed warmer waters in the Red Sea, TCI in the Caribbean and a rig dive off Corpus. Stalled recently due to other stuff but getting it going again - shame to waste some good warm water on the Gulf Coast!

Looking for some buddies to get in local dives and a few beers wouldn't go amiss.
Dive, Dive, Dive.
