Welcome to the club. You're start does not sound backwards to me - that's how I got started. Went to Cancun a long time ago and went out on a snorkel trip, was amazed to be with the fishes like I was in an aquarium. Me and my gf at the time returned from that trip and signed up for scuba the next week.

Hi All,

Very excited to have joined this group. Just began diving the end of July and at the end of August, completed my AOW.

Looking forward to meeting the group at Stag's Head this evening. May be a bit late, but I'll be there.

Enjoy your day - RP

Hi everyone,

I'm Gregori Trojan, and I just moved to the Houston area almost a year ago. I was active duty military for the last 6 years, and diving is my bigggest hobby I have. I'm excited to be apart of this club, which I learned about from the Diver's Flea Market last weekend. I'm always up for diving, so hit me up if you want to dive! Thanks.

Hi! I have a whopping 11 dives under my belt and just completed my Advanced Certification (I did PADI Open Water in Aug 2010, PADI Advanced Oct 2010.) I have yet to see anything better than 5' of viz (thanks, Lake Travis and Mammoth Lake), and have now experienced my first anxiety attacks in my life while underwater. Yay. Any advice on how to quell the anxiety would be GREATLY appreciated (I have the "just breathe" down pat...trying to see how to avoid them completely!) Once I get past it, I'm totally fine...but those 3 or 4 minutes REALLY suck.
Looking forward to getting to mermaid status....

Welcome. Anxiety is hard to diagnose over the web. Most of the time it is just a matter of improving your skills and gaining confidence though there could occasionally be physiological issues to address. It sounds like you have a bit of anxiety at the beginning of a dive but are able to work through and have an enjoyable dive. That is a really positive sign.

Too bad you didn't find us last week. We dived Athens Scuba Park last weekend and had 20 foot viz. We will be at Aquarena in San Marcos in November which has the best viz in Texas at 50 foot plus. It is actually a Scientific Diver course with some classroom and buoyancy tests.

I'm going with my divemaster buddies to 288 this weekend for "fun" diving, since all I've done is pretty much a lot of not-so-fun skills stuff. We'll see if I can knock out the anxiety! Wish I could join y'all in November, but will be out of town. Thanks!

Hey there@ Speaking as a fellow new diver let me share some of my experiences and what I learned about them. On my first open water checkout dive, I had a similar panic attack. When I first started under, saw nothing but murky blue water. Couldn't see the buoy line, none of the other divers or my dive buddy. It took me surfacing, and reorientating myself to calm down. One thing that helped me, then and since...is to keep a visual reference point. In my case following the line down gave me something to focus on and judge my descent rate.

During the rest of my dives, I have noticed a short period of time of increased air consumption before I calm down and get into the flow of my dive. The factors I have noticed are the more familiar I am with the location or dive conditions, this effect goes away. My advice to you would be to take your time. No need to rush....get comfortable before going further in your dive. Also, try to follow a downline and stay close to your buddy. The more you dive, the more familiar and comfortable with your gear and skills you will become. Before you know it...you might not even remember having those anxiety attacks =)

Greetings! I've been registered here for some time and occasionally lurk but never got around to posting and doing an intro so here it is..

My real name is David and I go by Texas Torpedo in most dive related forums. I've met a few CHUM members at various local dive spots and at Trashfest 09', who pointed me to this site originally, if memory serves.

I did my OW training back in April of 2009 @ The Blue Lagoon and since have amassed over 400 dives and moved into a number of "technical" diving specialties. To say I am a dive addict is quite an understatement. After driving to Florida 3 times in the span of 7 months for a variety of training and diving I visited Cozumel the first time as a diver this past March. I guess you can say I like the Island as I ended up moving down here semi-permanently in July and dive the reefs and cenotes as often as possible.

While it is great living and diving down here, I love taking a vacation from my vacation to go back home and dive with fellow Texans / Swampers in the water (and viz) I first started with, and still enjoy a great deal, believe it or not!

I received the notification about the meeting this Thursday and hope to attend as I land back in Houston earlier in the day. Looking forward to meeting everyone in person and hearing the presentation on Saltwater aquariums.

David

PS. If an admin reads this, I'd prefer "Texas Torpedo" to my current user name if you allow changes. Thx
