Been here in Houston just about 10 months now and have a desire to get back into diving after a few year hiatus. I have logged about 60-65 dives - mostly in Florida on the Atlantic side. As far as certs, YMCA OW - PADI AOW - TDI Nitrox - GUE DIR Fundamentals (Provisional).

I am a DIR guy (not wanting to start a flame war) and finding like minded folks around here seems difficult. I know Discover Scuba did a DIR-F course back in July. If anyone (I know I spoke to someone on SB) wants to get together for some dives let me know. A 3 year old and grad school might get in the way, but I can make time :)

Thanks to Outback for the warm welcome...

We have a couple of folk who were on that DIR-F course - Magenta and DrCheap so you've got a few DIRers around.

Hi folks,
I'm new to CHUM this week - made it along on Thursday after visiting the Gigglin Marlin and also speaking with Outback.
Seems a good bunch, met a few faces and enjoyed a couple of beers, good guest speaker.

Been diving for 4 years after starting in Scotland in dry suits. Enjoyed warmer waters in the Red Sea, TCI in the Caribbean and a rig dive off Corpus. Stalled recently due to other stuff but getting it going again - shame to waste some good warm water on the Gulf Coast!

Looking for some buddies to get in local dives and a few beers wouldn't go amiss.
Dive, Dive, Dive.

Love that Scottish diving!(brr) We're thinking of a trip to Scapa next year - done any of that?

A few of us were planning to do Scapa but I came over here instead. Supposed to be really good but some of the dives are a bit deep. you can do some of the ships but maybe not others. there is a dive boat with an onboard chamber, can always use it to shelter from the elements!

Done Oban and Tobermory dives in Sound of Mull with Puffin Dives, good wrecks but strong currents, stay in the Mishnish Pub if you go.

Was thinking about dives soon but may have to wait on H Rita.....

PhosphoERK as new CHUM

Hi. As far as introductions go, I've been diving for about 10 years, mostly off of Hawaii and in the Caribbean. I completed my Rescue Diver and had completed everything except for the internship part of a Divemaster course when I moved from San Diego to Houston. I never had any luck transferring my student profile to a local dive shop, so that endeavor died on the vine.

When I'm not diving, I'm a Ph.D. student in Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine working on learning and memory (both normal and otherwise).

HI everybody! I found this site by accident. Which is the way I usually find things, including my husband! I live in Pearland, work in Houston as most people do. I have been married forever and have two adult children (they like for me to call them that) who are attending college. I have always wanted to dive and I finally got certified in March. I have been to Cozumel twice. Since my husband "can't drink that much water," he doesn't dive. So I am hoping to meet you all and maybe collect dive buddies. CYA SOON! ;)

Oh am I stupid or what? I see what day the meeting will be but what time?

Welcome aboard. Let your husband know that we're as much about hanging out and b.s.ing as we are about diving, so non-divers are always welcome, too.

Stag's Head is indeed the normal meeting place. This month only, we have the No Safe Harbor book tour and Silent Auction in place of our regular meeting. It'll be right around the corner at Mykonos Island restaurant. Click here for more details.

Look forward to meeting you there!

I forgot about that. I wonder how long I would have hung around there drinking before I figured it out?

Maybe a few of us oughta hang out there until 7 to redirect any others who overlooked that?

I'm new, be my friend!

Hey everyone! Well I came across you guys at TRASHFEST last weekend, which was a total blast. And thought I'd join up! I've been certified for 6 years, since I was 12 years old! Right now I've only got my Open Water certification, but I'd love to get a divemaster cert, as I'm probably going to college at the University of Miami. And what's better than getting PAID to dive? So far, I've dove all over Florida, mostly in the Keys, and in Cozumel, Mexico. I also did a 10 day trip in Panama, 8 days on a 115 foot liveaboard doing oceanographic research in the Pacific Ocean which was amazing. We brought in the New Year 40 feet underwater! I won the trip at Trashfest, actually. Anyways, that's about as far as it goes for my diving experience in salt water, I've dove some rivers and lakes too, but salt is where it's at. I look forward to hearing from all you other crazy divers out there!

You got it

you've just made more friends than you can handle.

And we're all green with envy over your opportunity to attend Miami. :p

But wait, did you think divemasters get paid? ;)

Sounds like you have quite a bit of experience for BOW and AOW is simply a matter of Putting Another Dollar In (PADI). :D

We have an upcoming trip in November to Key Largo to dive the Spiegel Grove. I suspect you'll dive it a few dozen times in the next few years.

Greetings to everyone. I've been lurking for awhile and since I've been admonished by Stargazer, I guess I should say something about myself. I got my certification a year ago, went through both OW and AOW. I've done some diving in Mexico and did a couple of wreck dives in Bermuda. When I can get a free day I dive where ever I can find water deep enough to get under. Looking forward to meeting folks of a similar mindset.

Cheers!!

Hello all, John and I had great time with everyone at Trashfest 2005 this year! BTW, I let you guy's win at hold'm! Next time... that's all I'm going to say. I have some great pictures of some volunteers serving up the BBQ on the cell phone, let me know if you want to post them. Again, had a great time meeting everyone and look forward to all the future events.

A little bit about the katwoman.

I am a water person. ( Seems kind of strange for a kat) I like to swim, snorkel, dive, and kayak. I want to learn how to sail too. I prefer warm water but I have done some 62 degree dives. I got certified to dive a long time ago and went diving once or twice a year for several years. Then I lost all my buddies. Not diving!! - they moved., got married or something. I went on a few trips by myself and got buddied up with an odd person on the boat. That worked out for a few times. I had a bad experience diving with a guy that had just got certified and then I just didn’t dive anymore. I guess I kind of lost interest in diving. I started kayaking. I did a lot of kayaking and still do. To make a long story short, last summer I went to Bonaire with a friend of mine. I had a great time. I loved the diving and want to do more. I want to meet people to go diving with.

You've come to the right place. Your story is a lot like mine, and many others. Many of us aren't fortunate enough to have a diving spouse or best friend to help maintain the enthusiasm and serve as an ever-present reliable buddy. Since joining this club, I've had an abundance of dive buddies and have gone every weekend except two, when Rita hit and when me and my wife renewed our vows.

Your best bet is to hang out on this board and start coming to the monthly meetings (except we are having a party instead of a meeting in December). If you see an event or dive you want to join in on, just speak up. If you want to dive some weekend and there's not already a thread, just start a new one.
