For future reference, how many dives and skill is recommended for a trip like this?

I would suggest Advanced Open Water as a start for a training level. Number of dives has an effect but more importantly type of dives is key. Someone who only has training dives in a pool and limited depth lake dives would have a very challenging situation. Dives on the Fling has depth of up to your training level and beyond, nitrox air mixture (if certified) and on the oil rig dives a challenging current. Not to scare anyone away but I recommend diving with someone who knows these situations to help steer you to the best path to be comfortable.
