Austin may have South By Southwest but on Saturday Oct 12th, CHUM will be having South By Further South.
We'll start out (on the South side of town) at the BAD Diver's Market & Expo. Billed as the largest divers market in the Southwestern United States, this is a great place to pick up gear. In the past, CHUMmers have left with some pretty nice deals on both new and used equipment.
The event runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and costs $6 to get in (paid at the gate - this includes a door prize ticket). This year they're going to have some great food trucks on site too - Bernie's Burger Bus and Pho-Jita.
Get there early enough to browse, buy and get your grub on. At 2:00 pm sharp, we're going to move the CHUM convoy Further South, down to Galveston to visit our friends at the NOAA Corps and the FGBNMS.
We've arranged a tour of the NOAA vessel R/V Manta, which is assigned to the Sanctuary. Many of us have seen the charter boats that go out to the Flower Gardens. It'll be interesting to see the vessel that the researchers go out there on, how it's configured, and what missions it supports. Two pieces of fine print - 1) if you'd like to head straight to Galveston and meet us for the tour, plan on being there at 2:45 pm, exact address will be provided as we get closer. 2) Since the Manta is a government vessel, there's always a chance that a mission could come up that would supersede our tour. Odds are that won't happen though.
And if that wasn't enough fun for one day, Jamie (who some of you will remember as our June speaker) has suggested going out with us after the tour for some drinks at a place on the seawall.
How's that for a day of fun in the sun?
The Manta tour is the only part of the day that we need a headcount for, so if you're planning on coming to that, please reply to the thread and let us know.
***UPDATE 10 OCT*** Due to the shenannigans in Washington, we unfortunately are unable to do the Manta tour. CHUM will be congregating at the Turtle Club on Clear Lake to cuss the politicians and toast the fine employees of the Shiner Brewery.
Whichever part you come to, wear your CHUM shirt!
SXFS - be there!
