Attached is the TGCC Scholarship form for the year 2026. A minimum of one 500 dollar scholarship will be awarded. Last year due to some generous donations we were able to award 8 scholarships.

I would encourage those interested to apply. Members of CHUM who are Tiger Sharks their children and grandchildren are eligible.

Members of CHUM have received these scholarships frequently in the past.

Please note these scholarships can only be awarded to students attending schools in the United States(a change from prior policy)

Subject:TGCC – 2026 Scholarships

From:Frank Burek

Date:July 10, 2026

The Texas Gulf Coast Council of Diving Clubs (TGCC or Council) has historically supported the members of its member clubs with annual college scholarship award support. The following discusses the program and concludes with the results of the Council’s 2026 program.

The material contained in this e-mail is releasable to your clubs. I have e-mailed (notified) all the participants of this year’s recipients of a TGCC Memorial College Scholarship Award.

The TGCC annually conducts its Scholarship Program in memory of deceased members of our dive community - Jack Allyn, John Anderson, Soodabeh O. Babcock, Barney Carbin, Rodney Dwire, Randy Gray, Mike Griggs, Greg Grimes, Jean Himes, Anne Millioud, Clint (Dwight) Moore, Richard Mork, John Petty, Ann Ramsey, Jackie & Mary Lou Reid, John Ringrose, Wanda Roark, Peter Schmidt, Katie Springs, Margie M. Straight, Frank Strausborger, Michael Szewczyk, Peggy Widaman, Randy Widaman, Ted Wimprine, Kenneth Young and Dick Zingula. These past members are also permanently recognized on the “Dive Community’s Memorial Plaque”.

The TGCC also uses the announcement of the scholarship awards to thank again those who have helped financially support this scholarship program. In alphabetic order they are - Frank & Joyce Burek, Tom Burns, Rodney Dwire, Alicia Grimes, the Houston Underwater Club, the Houston Underwater Photographic Society, Pete & Norma Hunter, Mark Leiserowitz, Lunarfins Scuba Club, Loy Murphy, Mike Peters, Linda Petty, David Pichler, Ja Van Pruett, Russell Ramsey, Louise & Fred Toole and Billie Williams.

Scholarship awards were decided by a vote of the TGCC officers and Club Representatives (Council) from each of the TGCC full member clubs on July 9th.

This year we had seven (7) applicants. TGCC awarded scholarships to all applicants. One has a HUPS sponsor, six had Lunarfins sponsor. Their credentials included such things as being a certified diver; having grades and extract circular histories of such caliber that their college provides some financial support; having unique linguistic skills; strong technical majors; to demonstrating both athletic and academic excellence.

TGCC’s decision to awarded multiple was based upon:

  • The strength of their applications.
  • Our desire to support promising students
  • Recent donations from members of the dive community to support the Scholarship Program
  • The Council’s desire to support our member clubs; their members, children and grandchildren.

The selection of our scholarship award recipients; and the review of their accomplishments, hopes and dreams is a highpoint in this Diving Council’s year. Our scholarship awards are an investment in our community’s future.

The following awards were made and will be sent to their respective schools:
