Was out at Mammoth with a class this weekend and once again had great visibility. It had to be pushing 20' in a lot of places. Water temp was hovering around 90, but after the students left we dove down to one of the aerators at 48' and the temp dropped to 86.

We found real 44' south of the tellow submarine

I also dove Mammmoth on Sunday..
Went to the far end of the lake, opposite end from the shop.. It was GREAT!!!
Almost like being in the lake alone.. just you and your dive buddies.

Loved following the lines from item to item.

Saw both Mammoths, Boat Hedge, several boats, trucks, man eating clam....
Vis was good and the 2 dives were each and hour long.

I forgot to add our dive times to my previous post

The first dive was 85 minutes and that was because we started the dive with a 2500 psi short fill.

Our second dive was 100 minutes with 500 psi left

The deepest area should still be just north of the "Deep Hole". That is where we had our pump when we were digging sand. Of course, it could have silted in since we flooded it. It is also some what small, about 30X60'. You should be able to hit 50' there. (That is why we buried the tank there for the 60'.)

We have a neighbor across the street that is operating a sand pit. He is still pumping water therefore lowing the water table. I would think when he stops pumping, our water level will increase 5 or so feet.

The place where you hit the 44' has been coined "sand lake" because that was the last place we were digging for we found some very pretty white sand there. It does cover a large area and averages over 40'. The C-130 is on the west edge of sand lake.

On another issue...

We have decided that we will not be doing cave training because the viz is worse in our closed "cave" system than outside. We have to have 30' of viz for training purposes so we decided this fall we will break it up into a bunch of swim thrus. The total length is around 200'.

Everyone will enjoy it then anyway.

Ok, are you saying then that it is not possible right now to achieve the 60' depth required for an AOW deep dive?

Using a tape measure the depth is over 60' but computers seem to be a little different. I have 3 different computers get depths between 59'-62'. I had someone tell me the other day they were only getting 56' but after talking to them a few minutes I found out they were standing on the bottom so their computer was not laying on bottom.

More specifically, I'm asking with regards to AOW deep, can such a class dive be reasonably done there? Having students wallow in the mud to get six zero won't be very fun. Is there a platform?

There is no platform down there. The last time I had students in there we had zero viz due to it silting up easily

Yes, it is 60' which as far as I have found is the requirement for AOW. If the diver is finning as they go down it will silt out. But I have dove it many times and had vis all the way across the pipe. It is not perfect but it gets the job done.

Hoover was saying the natural deepest bottom was approx 50'. What most of us refer to as deep hole is an approximately 10' diameter metal pipe with an metal bottom buried vertical straight down into bottom of lake, which allows divers to reach a depth of 60' to 63', which allows AOW.

Yes, kind of. It is a chain rather than a line. I believe there is also a hang bar at 15' so there is room for several people.

When we were in the hole, we had 100% visibility all the way down. Viz was better than it was in the open lake.
