Discovery Channel is having a "Shark Sunday" on Feb 10th. Mostly just re-runs of the same old sensationalist stuff they've been running, but American Shark might be worth watching.

Not sure if it's a repeat or not.

Last Thursday night on Anderson Cooper's "Planet in Peril" (cant remember if it was CNN or Headline News), they had a fairly long segment on the shark finning industry, followed by Anderson Cooper himself diving with Great Whites off the coast of S. Africa.

Don't know if they're going to re-run it, but if they do, it's worth catching. It's nice to see this getting picked up by mainstream media, and the coverage was definitely not the usual "sharks eat people" that typically shows up.

Anybody catch "Extreme Pools" on the Travel Channel?

They had segments on the NBL and the NEMO facility over in Belgium, plus an Austrian brewery that has a swimming pool filled with beer. Added a few places to my wish list...

Oh how funny...I did see that.

It was really cool seeing the NBL on tv.

Hey, speaking of which....

Discovery Channel's Shark Week begins August 2nd. On Friday August 6th at 9pm eastern (I think), they will air "Sharks After Dark". This segment was shot at 4 different locations....North Carolina was one of them....they shot if off of our boats and did several intereviews and briefings with us. I think that one of my briefings made the final cut. Tune in and see....

Same stuff

Same stuff, really.

Tonight they start off with a two hour special on the bull shark attacks on Long Island in, like 1916, or sometime way back when....Since sharks really are not killing people like we think they do, they need to bring up something that happened almost 100 years ago so we can stay scared at them.

Lots of titles dealing with "blood" "Killers", etc...When you actually read what is in the episode it really does not have to do with cold-blooded killer stuff, more feeding habits.

Later in the week it gets better, with more scientific reporting shows and facts coming out than the drama and sensationalism of the first couple of days.

...I really dont understand the Discovery Channel. They preach shark conservation all the time but yet want the shark to still be portrayed as some sort of criminal. Ah well...Bring on the TV! This is still one of my favorite times of the year! Hooray sharks!:D

Shark Week:
I am taking this opportunity to educate my 9 year-old on the Discovery Channel spin. I showed him the two videos that I had posted on my facebook and then made sure to point out how Shark Week sensationalizes the "Blood-thirsty Killer" view (in comparison to the David Ulloa video). At least there will be one more member of the future generation of divers who will support shark conservation and accurate reporting.

I've been thinking we should produce a week's worth of interviews with people who've gone to the beach and NOT been attacked by sharks.

It's nice to see the conservation-related ads that the Discovery Channel's running this year, but the sensationalistic shows do get a little old...
