As Mark mentioned, the Houston Underwater Film Festival is back for its 4th and perhaps best year on April 6th & 7th at MATCH in midtown. I was on the selection committee again this year and there are some fantastic films that made the cut.

All of the films are 5 mins max, many are much shorter. Saturday attendees will get to see films in the categories of “Protect and Respect the Oceans”, “Shorts Videos” and “Art House Flicks”. Sunday's guests will watch the “Made in Texas”, “Dance and Free Diving”, “Animation” and “Feature Length” categories. The entries in each category can be found here.

After each category, YOU get to vote on your favorites straight from your phone to determine the winners.

After the show both days, there's also a raffle which helps fund the HUFF. The raffle items this year will likely include trip and liveaboard certificates, gear, and definitely include a 5-year Texas Diver Plate. You do have to be present to win. For the kind of items available, your odds of winning are remarkably high. I'd encourage everyone to participate in the raffle. After the Sunday show there's also an awards reception so you can find out the winners of each category. Entry to the reception is free, but there is a ticket required for the light buffet. My suggestion is to get a buffet ticket if you're going to the reception. You'll be glad you did.

Tickets are now available at this link. You can go just Saturday, just Sunday or both days. Can't make it in person? No problem! There's a Video on Demand option as well (which is how I'll be watching this year). The VOD will be accessible starting Tuesday, April 9 and access will continue until midnight on Sunday, April 14.

Mark is also helping to coordinate CHUM volunteers for that day in this thread. (Volunteers so still need to buy a ticket, fyi.) Craig, Betsy, and the HUFF committee put a lot of work into the event and appreciate all of the help they can get that weekend.

This is a great event for the Houston dive community. I hope lots of CHUMmers are able to make it this year. I promise, you'll be glad you did! Spread the word.

Who is planning on going to HUFF '24?

About 2/3 of the way through the trailer, some of you may recognize members of Force Blue. Their film being submitted is a direct result of them being a CHUM speaker, which warms my heart.

I'm also a member of HUPS,so will be volunteering for both days. This is a fun event to see the creativity that folks from around the globe bring to photography & videography. FYI: There will also be raffle items at the award ceremony. Buy your tickets as soon as you get into the room. Last year, I won $ 1,000 certificates for IKELITE and got a new TG6 camera with housing!

I have enjoyed these events in the past and just bought tickets to attend both sessions (Sat/Sun), and the buffet for the awards on the Sunday.
Likely have a few beers also.

I don't think I'll be able to make it on Saturday, but I'm going to try to go on Sunday.

I'll be there both days! Bought my ticket!
I'm a maybe on Sunday now. I've got dog food to make and bookshelves to paint, so unless I can manage to make some significant progress on both of those things during the week, I probably won't be going on Sunday. I'd like to make it to the Sunday show, but I don't know if I'll have time.

I went with the video on demand option. I've never been to that Midtown venue, and would have liked to check it out, but I have a funeral to attend next weekend. I'll have to wait until the 9th to watch the videos. Looks like a lot of interesting entries.

In the spirit of this event, here's a clip I found recently that was exceptionally well done, especially the shots of the bait balls and the blue sharks:

Hunter Or Prey - Freediving Azores with Hammerhead Sharks, Mobulas, Baitballs, Bluesharks

Looking forward to this for the weekend.

I may Uber on the Sunday rather than driving (I couldn't stay late last year) since it was pretty social after the buffet as everyone celebrated a successful show. :D

Well, this weekend has NOT gone as planned. First, my hair appointment yesterday ended running super late, so I didn't make it to yesterday's show. I thought no big deal, I'll just go to the Sunday show. Then I got home, and discovered that Ellie and Callie had conspired to get into the compost bin while I was gone. The compost bin had a bunch of chicken bones and some onion scraps in it, which were presumably all eaten by Ellie. ER vet said that the bones should dissolve, but she may have some vomiting and diarrhea. So far she's fine, but I don't know if she'll stay that way. So I will likely be staying home to keep an eye on my idiot dog.
