As Mark mentioned, the Houston Underwater Film Festival is back for its 4th and perhaps best year on April 6th & 7th at MATCH in midtown. I was on the selection committee again this year and there are some fantastic films that made the cut.
All of the films are 5 mins max, many are much shorter. Saturday attendees will get to see films in the categories of “Protect and Respect the Oceans”, “Shorts Videos” and “Art House Flicks”. Sunday's guests will watch the “Made in Texas”, “Dance and Free Diving”, “Animation” and “Feature Length” categories. The entries in each category can be found here.
After each category, YOU get to vote on your favorites straight from your phone to determine the winners.
After the show both days, there's also a raffle which helps fund the HUFF. The raffle items this year will likely include trip and liveaboard certificates, gear, and definitely include a 5-year Texas Diver Plate. You do have to be present to win. For the kind of items available, your odds of winning are remarkably high. I'd encourage everyone to participate in the raffle. After the Sunday show there's also an awards reception so you can find out the winners of each category. Entry to the reception is free, but there is a ticket required for the light buffet. My suggestion is to get a buffet ticket if you're going to the reception. You'll be glad you did.
Tickets are now available at this link. You can go just Saturday, just Sunday or both days. Can't make it in person? No problem! There's a Video on Demand option as well (which is how I'll be watching this year). The VOD will be accessible starting Tuesday, April 9 and access will continue until midnight on Sunday, April 14.
Mark is also helping to coordinate CHUM volunteers for that day in this thread. (Volunteers so still need to buy a ticket, fyi.) Craig, Betsy, and the HUFF committee put a lot of work into the event and appreciate all of the help they can get that weekend.
This is a great event for the Houston dive community. I hope lots of CHUMmers are able to make it this year. I promise, you'll be glad you did! Spread the word.
Who is planning on going to HUFF '24?
