Great Vis for 288

Water temp at top was in the 60s, 63 I think and 53 at the bottom. Visibility was the best I have seen it. You could almost see the bus form one end to the other. So I would say 20' maybe...

Great day to dive.

Good to know it's open. Will try to get some friends out next weekend due to the good conditions. The "old pit" is still a favorite & seems to be coming back. Will also try Mammoth, but heard it was closed. Some support all around would be great. Looking at (future) $4 gas to get to others, etc.

Shadow Diver and I went out for some early dives at Main Beach this morning and it was a fantastic day for diving! Vis was the second best I've seen at Blue Lagoon with about 25-30' for the first dive and about 15-20 for the second.

Temp is starting to warm up to about 73-75 surface temp and I believe it was about 65-68 at depth.

All in all, great day to be in the water!

Thank goodness for a two month drought ! No rain there means good vis. Just wondering, the vis went down significantly for the second dive. Starting to plan my weekends, is it that crowded already?

Honestly, we really saw one OW class swimming through all day. While that is probably a good enough reason for the drop in vis, I was also testing out new gear and plunked down on the back of one of the boats and kicked up some debris.

Other than that...we really had the place to ourselves

Snarfal -- way to get in the water, buddy! Was bummed I wasn't there, and I'm sorry I never got you the map. Glad you didn't get lost. :p

DAMdiver -- Welcome, Dustin! You'll have to camp with us when we go to Blue Lagoon on a local dive outing. :)

We dove at Mammoth Lake today.

Hydrosports is no longer there. Ryan owns the dive shop now and has really fixed up the place. He sells mostly SCUBA Pro and has brand new rental gear and tanks.

The temp was 75 and viz was 20-25 feet.

There really wasn't much of a thermocline. It was a little colder at the bottom of the C-130 and we measured 71 degrees at the botton of the 60 foot tube.

There was a lot of people out there today.

Current conditions

Made 3 dives out there this afternoon. The last few times we were at 288 Lake, the visibility was easily around 15' on the East side of the lake today included, as well as around the platforms this afternoon. Temp is 78 degrees down to 22' where the stark thermocline brings you to a chilly 69 degrees.

Lots and lots and lots and lots of teeny tiny baby fish in and around the hydrilla. Saw tons of perch, a few bass, and a chunky catfish.

Thanks atlas750 for suggesting the dives today. Temp was 79 degrees to about 28 feet and viz was 15 footish. We did two dives, didn't see many divers above water and none underneath. We did see a bunch of fish though including some big bass, a few ear-nibbling perch, and a BUNCH of minnows on the steeple. After Ken Knezick's presentation at the meeting I mustered the courage to put my camera into manual made and shoot some pics. Hopefully some turned out. All in all, a nice day diving and a great way to kick off the holiday weekend.

I uploaded a few pics into the Gallery. National Geographic won't be dialing my number anytime soon, but I'm pretty happy with them for my first time in manual mode. I thought the school of fish at the steeple was particularly cool. :happyeyepatch:

Mammoth Lake, Clute Texas 19MAY2012

Surface temp: 83f
Never felt a thermocline
Temp at 35' was 80f
Visibility was the best it has been all year, and remarkable how much it improved since last week. Will attach a picture I took of the platform near C130 as a visibility gauge. I feel vis was 12' to 18' dependent upon location. Platform's are approximately 16' by 16' across, a little more diagonal.

Water is warm and vis is still across the platforms. I'd say 10-12ft+ depending on the location. Sky was overcast and rainy today so it was a little dark, but if the sun was out it would have been a great day at mammoth.

Found a big satellite dish on a 20ft tower today SW of boathenge that I've never seen before... if you just swim straight long enough you will always see something new in mammoth.

2-3ft vis mostly, could almost see the 3rd step on the stair, no transitional thermocline and 64deg. We could see the platform if we laid on it (with lights). I motioned I could only see 2 feet and buddy thought I said swim so we followed a few lines where the vis opened up to 4ft in some areas for a nice view of the dirt and some sleepy fish.. separated at 30 minutes, called it.
