Lake 288

Air Temp was 70F

Water Temp was 64F with a 5 degree thermocline at 12ft give or take.

Bottom temp was 60F. Still a bit chilly for my lovely head to be uncovered right now but there were a few people without a hood. I am a pansy though.

Viz was about 8-13 ft

288 Lake on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth be with you!) - 72 degrees down to about 18 ffw, 15-20' of viz. Really nice conditions for 288. I also saw a 3' carp, which I'd never seen there before. A great spring day to be hanging out at the lake!

Lake 288 - May 2014

Lake 288 was low 70's on the surface and 68F at depth.
I think I hit 66F or lower, out nearer the middle of the lake at depth but generally consistently higher.

Viz was about 10' and often less.

Nice & toasty in a 5mm wetsuit. :piratewithhat2:

cheers,
McLot

Temps at 288 this weekend were in the 80's, which made for some comfortable diving. Unfortunately last week's rains made the viz pretty low in most places. Good to see so much going on at the lake though. In addition to divers, there were kyakers, swimmers and even some paddleboard yoga classes.

288 Lake was a toasty 88 degrees yesterday. Viz was pretty good above the hazeocline, opening up to 10' or so in some places. Below 20 ffw, the temp dropped to the low 80's and viz was a foot at best.

It was great meeting y'all, Rumbum and ChrisPete. Those of you on the June Flower Gardens trip may remember ChrisPete, he was one of our DM's on the trip. I look forward to diving with y'all again soon!

Also, I've discovered that Sysco Donuts just on the south side of BW8 by the lake has some tasty boudain kolaches which make a great surface interval snack!

Blue Lagoon Aug 9 2014

The past two weekends at blue lagoon have been really good. Bottom Temp 89, and the vis on saturday was excellent. You could see the platforms when floating at the surface. I could even see divers on the bottom as they were moving around. even with the students churning it up the vis was 10-15ft horizontal. Eleanor Z and I did 3 really fun dives.:piratewithhat2:

GWNDWN and I knocked out an October dive at 288 Lake today. The water was a comfy 81 degrees. And the viz? Well, let's just say it was good training for the Cooper River.

10/5/2014 @ Lake Travis, Austin, TX

My computer was at 79F down to around 50'. Viz at Fiesta House was around 10' but on the second dive at Starnes Island it was around 5'. Nonetheless pretty neat dives in a new location for me.

Mammoth Lake, 3 Apr - 61 degree water temp, viz variable from less to a foot to 10+ feet in a few places, most of the time somewhere in between.

Thanks to McLot for joining for a nice dive. We explored the C-130 and paid a visit to CHUM's Mammoth Divecache. It's still there and waiting for the next person to come find it. We hit a few random boats, found the motorcycle and ended up at the NASA training jet. The bass were unusually aggressive. One zoomed up to my face, another shot in and struck my hand. Glad I had gloves on! I wonder whether it's spawning season or if I just smelled bad...

Lunch at Zum Gasthaus was, well, interesting. The beer was good, the food very German, but the ambiance was very quirky. It felt a bit like visiting an elderly great aunt, complete with curtains closed all the way so no light gets in the windows and a tv blaring in the corner. May try the pub next time.

288 Lake - April 26th

Visibility was around 10 feet away from the platforms. Water temps: 70 degrees above 20 feet and 63 below the the thermocline. I saw a huge grass carp. I'm not sure if they are a new addition but the weeds are way down....could just be the time of year. The lake is up about a foot or so and the docks are almost level again.

I was fortunate enough to get on the Fling trip this past weekend 4/24/15 - 4/26/15. Signed up Friday afternoon and grabbed one of the last 2 slots.

The ride out was a little bumpy, a few new sailers hadn't prepared and had to use their garbage bags, but by the morning everyone appeared to be feeling great.

Dive breakdown:

1-2 at WFGB #2 75deg, 70' viz, moderate current
3 at HI-389 75deg, 70' viz, high swells / strong current outside the structure
4-5 at EFGB #6 75deg, 70' viz, moderate current
6-7 at Stetson 73deg, 70' viz, least current of the trip

The trip was fantastic. There were hammerheads, a tiger shark (or maybe reef, waiting on picture confirmation), stingrays, morays, silkys, and even mantas. Unfortunately, I did not get to see a hammerhead or manta, but I did witness the supposed tiger shark from a distance. The temperature was very comfortable for me in a full 3mm and hood. The rough seas caused a few issues for a few divers on the trip, but other than that everyone appeared to have a fantastic time, as usual.

It was a great day to be diving at Mammoth Lake! Between the 4 of us from the meeting and some close associates, we had a group of 9. We weren't all in the water at the same time, but staggering the entries allowed us to keep nice small groups given the 7-10' viz.

Water temp was upper 70's on the surface, dropping down to a brisk 68 below 25'. With a 3 mil, hood and light gloves, it was very comfortable. Ryan and I got in a 45 minute dive to the C-130 and back.

Rig GA-424C 30 miles out Thurs 11 June

Ripping current on surface, impossible to swim against in gear. Dropped off at 25ft.
Warm on surface, (82F) and big thermocline at 25' to 79F going down to 77F at 100'
Vis terrible in thermoline region and bad (brown on surface). Very clear and calm below. Made for odd golden light above and blue water below.
No current below 40'.

5 lion fish on that rig. Three small, two larger.
The lion fish are now 30 miles from Freeport and closing...

Couple of dives and moved to rig 5 miles in. Worse visibility but same: ripping current, cooler calm water below.

288 Lake was toasty warm today with 86 degree water temp. Viz wasn't great, maybe 5-7' in most places.

What was noticeable was the lack of hydrilla. In the past year or two there have been huge walls of it. McLOT and I covered a lot of the eastern side of the lake and didn't come across any.

I brought my camera along just for kicks. I'll check later to see if any of the shots turned out ok.

I emailed Jimmy at 288 to ask him about the hydrilla, and the reduction is thanks to some Triploid Grass Carp which they introduced a few years ago. They eat their body weight per day in vegetation.

I've glimpsed one a few times during dives, I think a few other folks have as well.
