Yikes..a friend of Diver Dan's...

Yeah okay, you can still join in.

This group makes it to Austin quite a bit so I'm sure you won't be lacking in dive buddies before too long.

Nema the run away...

Hello, this is my first visit. I've had a diving problem since 2000. Also new to the Houston area, work for an offshore company in Louisiana.... Someone handed me a regulator in Boston, MA (i took a hit off of it....next thing i know im lying face down in the bathtub with fins and a wetsuit on... credit cards maxed out... you know how it is). Looking for support in my addiction...

Hi y'all,

I am Randy Ashley, user name rashley, and live in McAllen, TX. McAllen is about an hour from the coast at South Padre Island. Thanks to ReefHound for inviting me to join, and I look forward to meeting/diving with you guys.

I have been diving for 11 years and LOVE it.

Welcome, I'm probably going to be shouting we were FIRST ON THE CLIPPER to anyone who will listen for the rest of the year.

Welcome to CHUM, you may have just volunteered yourself to be the unofficial SPI tour guide when CHUM comes back down next year to dive the Clipper again.

New to CHUM...

Greetings from your neighbor to the east, that bastion of fried seafood, hurricanes and Dixie beer; you guessed it - Louisiana. Although I don't spend much time here, they tell me its nice in May and October. All other times of the year bring your rain gear and mosquito repellent. But I know my comrades in Houston know that drill as well.

Well I started out diving when someone introduced a 2 for 1 intro course to me at the mall when I was Christmas shopping in 1998. I got PADI certified in OW, AOW and Rescue, and then faded out of the diving picture with a few exceptions for the next 7 years, until 2006 when I started diving on the live aboard Juliet out of Miami and Provo. I finished up 6 specialties on a one week trip and master scuba diver.

In May of this year, I met a friend of a friend while diving on the Oriskany and that led to continuing my training again. The friend is the owner of a local dive shop in Houston, and he introduced me to Cave Diver in June, and since then I have taken Advanced Nitrox, Deep Diver, Cavern and Twin Sets. We are trying to put together a trip to NFL in late December/early January to complete full cave. Anyone interested? On the last trip I got to meet Gary Taylor. (I am in the picture that Cave Diver posted from Little River, on the left end).

I am looking forward to going further into the tech diving realm with PSAI and Cave Diver. Right now I am in the market for a primary light; I am leaning toward the Salvo 10.4A 21W version. I also need a good dry suit. (Any recommendations?) and I think I like the Faber LP 108 twin sets. Cave Diver uses the HP-130s, but they are a bit beefy for me at present. I think I need to keep working out on my Bowflex a little longer before I can handle those comfortably.

I get to Houston occasionally for business, but am always up for a trip to go dive somewhere. Give me a shout.

Chat with you soon.

Welcome Jim. The Oriskany might be the trick to getting me to go tech. I've seen the Island, but want to enter the hangers and below.

welcome jim,

I love the 108's and have a couple of sets that I sidemount. Great tanks for about 80% of my diving.....especially considering they are generally holding around 135cf;)

I'm with you. That's why I keep telling Cave Diver that he needs to get his PSAI wreck diver instructor certification so we can all go play inside the Mighty O. (Even Gary agreed with me.)

I don't know what it is exactly, but it seems like I am okay with the weight of the 108s, but the weight of the 130's seems to really tax me alot more. The listed weight empty is only 2 pounds per tank more for the 130s. Of course filled and with doubles, you are probably talking another 7 or 8 pounds though. It must just be my comfort limit at this point for the weight my body is willing to comfortably bear.

Did you need to up size your burst disk to get clearance for the overfill pressure, or is the factory burst disk adequate at the overfill pressure (since the tank is nominally 2400)?

Actually the tanks are Plus rated for 2640 psi. Burst disks will hold at higher pressures but when you have 50 dollars of helium in them.....a little extra insurance is nice.

I know what you mean about that "little" bit of extra weight. That's the one reason I prefer 108's over 104's.
