Hi and welcome to the City of Houston Underwater Mariners Bulletin Board. CHUM is a social dive club of divers based in Houston, Texas.

CHUM meets every 3rd Thursday of the month (except for December) at Jake's Sports Bar on Chimney Rock. Usually we'll have a guest speaker, or some entertainment and beers and cheers. All are welcome. For those of you logging in from out of town, the forums are for anyone, anywhere, so feel free to register and join in.

Once you have registered, please take a few moments to tell us something about yourself by replying to this thread. If you're new to diving, we have some experienced folk here on the site who'll be happy to answer questions, and if you are an old hand, then we're happy to ask you questions!

Check out our Upcoming Events thread to find out about upcoming meetings, dive and social events. And be sure to check out the Welcome to CHUM page.
I’m Curtis,
New to diving but an expert at beer! Ridiculously interested in anything and everything diving related. Maybe find a dive buddy and get this stuff started!

Hi JJ, welcome! You’ve come to the right place.

The forums are kind of our central repository but we also spread the word on Facebook, Instagram, ScubaBoard and YouTube. There are scrolling banner ads near the top of the forum pages. Look for the one with the black background. That has links to our pages on each of those.

Also, our monthly meeting is coming up next Thursday, which is a great way to get to know the club. Details on that are at

If you want to get your gear wet, we have a group going to Mammoth Lake on Sat:
Thanks a lot for the warm welcome and the info. I will do my best to join for this month’s meeting

Sorry for the double post,

My name is James Brock, I'm a newly certified diver (September 3rd, 2022). I have been to the Blue Lagoon a couple of times and Mammoth lake once with some experienced friends. I Have a planned dive trip to Key Largo in the first week of December 2022, then Cozumel and Roatan on a cruise trip in February 2023. My name is Gus … I am a mechanical engineer and hvac contractor … i’ve lived in Houston for 40 years and I have a masters degree from the University of Houston … got PADI certified in 2004, did a few dives but then I got distracted by more important things in life and now one of my two boys is certified SSI and we’re starting to dive together … I’m probably one of the older newbies here but I am looking forward to becoming active in diving … I know I will not become addicted to it especially now and I try to have fun doing other things like golf, gardening … used to ride my motorcycle with a group of friends until I finally succumbed to my wife’s pleading to stop so that some idiot driver doesn’t run me over! … I live in Katy … That’s all for now

yay, chum the waters, bring in the sharks,
I am an old chummer , my account was lost at some point so making a new one.
I have not been in the water in over three years, so Im a little dusty. but not rusty,
I saw a chummer at a bar Sunday wearing his colors, and decided to look yall up again.
I added the meetings to my calendar, and hope to make a few in the future and may see if my 10Mil is wholy or not and make a DAM with yall to blow a few bubbles. I am a newly single guy so my time is my own to use as I find necessary.
Marc.

Hi everyone,

I am new to the group was referred by Roger on the Facebook group. I got PADI open water certification in August 2021 and then the SSI Advanced Diver cert in January of 2022. I've dived in Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta and Roatan all in a span of a year and I have to tell you it's been an amazing experience that has changed my life. I wish I would of done this sooner in life but here we are. I don't know many fellow SCUBA divers but am excited to meet others because diving alone can be rewarding but I prefer to dive in groups.

Welcome Fonzi! Aaay.

Listening to Roger will get you in trouble, but only the good kind.

You’ve come to the right place for diving. Keep an eye on the Dive Buddy Board for local diving. We also have a Nov meeting and a Dec holiday party coming up.

Looking forward to meeting you soon!

Hey CHUMMers or is it CHUMMies?

Just found you guys yesterday and excited to get to know and dive with you. I originally got certified back in the 80's (back when dive computers were brand new, expensive and not to be trusted) and have done 40ish non-logged dives over the years and have decidided to get back into it seriously. Got my daughter certified last year and went through the course with her so my card says I'm a noob - but that's okay I really like getting updated on the new gear, techniques and procedures (what do you mean learning the tables is optional? o_O).

I want to do a LOT of diving! I retired last year and my post retirement gig is that I'm a sailing instructor and USCG licensed captain doing charters out of Kemah on mine and other's boats. I want to eventially expand my services to add diving to my charters, with me possibly being a DM. So that's part of the drive to get a lot of diving in and the other parts are that it's really cool, fun and is done along with really great people. Without the anchor of a regular job I'm flexible to go diving almost anytime and I'll be posting to the Buddy Board.

CHUMMERS!!!! Arrrrrgh!!!!!

WELCOME to the club!!! Please please please come to our Christmas Party this Wednesday!!! It is a GRRRRRRREAT way to get to know all of us and share a few beers and laughs in a super low key and fun setting!!!!

You have found the BEST diving group around!!!! Someone is ALWAYS willing to get wet almost every weekend. If you are wanting to do some serious diving and often, you are the perfect candidate to become a DAM CHUMmer. DAM stands for Dive A Month.

COOOOOOOL!!!!! There are several of us that are also sailors with our own sailboats, but none of our sailboats are on the Gulf Coast. We (me and @24%) have a sailboat up in Northern Michigan on Lake Charlevoix; @Seaagg05 and @SilverBubbles have a sailboat up in Door County, Wisconsin; @DivingDoug has a sailboat up in Canada. We LOVE sailing and diving!!!

24% and I are fulltimers in a motorcoach and we spend our winters down in Port Aransas where we have fellow friends that also sail. Would love to meet up with you to sail in Kemah or you can come down to Port A and we'll go out on our friend's Catalina 30 S/V YachtSea. What kind of boat do you have?

Siren thanks for the welcome. Wish I could make the Christmas Party but I’m already triple party booked on Wednesday.

I actually have 2 boats. A Catalina 22 that I primarily race and a Benetau 42.
