Hello folks,

Quick introduction - I'm originally from the UK, lived in Canada for 13 years, moved to the US in 2010, then in Belize for a couple of years before finally making it to the great Republic of Texas in 2017.

I started diving in 1979 when I first qualified with the British Sub Aqua Club. While I was in the Royal Navy I qualified as a ships diving officer performing that role on various ships and submarines.

Then life happened and I've been out of the water for far too long.

So last year my new bride, Cathy, and I were on a cruise and we decided to use the time to complete our Open Water qual. Since then we've logged 37 dives (just returned from a weeks diving in Florida) and plan to go to Cozumel in December to complete our PADI Master Scuba Diver cert.

The next step in that journey is to complete the PADI Rescue Diver cert, so if anyone knows of a course being run over the next couple of months, please let me know.

We also want to try and dive at least once a month so I'm looking forward to hearing about upcoming trips.

Sounds quite interesting, we might just hit you up as a monthly meeting speaker about that Royal Navy diving. Even in these crazy times, where international trips are becoming a distant memory, we are still keeping up with our DAM (Dive A Month) CHUMmer program and hitting up local dive spots every month. Where were you in Florida?

Maximum Scuba at Lake Longhorn has Rescue diver courses starting all the time, my son and I are going to start Rescue as soon as he finished his deep dive for Advanced

Welcome Ironrod! My dad was in the Navy for many years in Malta, RNEC Manadon and ending up HMS Raleigh. I learned to swim in the pool at Raleigh, watching the poor recruits being harassed off the high dive platform in boiler suits (that we kids were just dying to jump off but weren't allowed).
There are always some folks heading to a nearby lake monthly to keep their eye in, someone starts a thread (normally in the Dive Buddy board) and it goes from there.

Welcome to the club, @Ironrod! If you haven't yet, check out the Dive Houston page. There are lots of great shops in the area that regularly do rescue classes.

I'm also curious about where you were in Florida! I was out in Florida a lot in the before days (before COVID, naturally).

Thanks the navy diving was pretty unspectacular - normally zero viz at the bottom of the dockyard grubbing around in the mud (sewage) trying to find something that was dropped overboard. Using the Limpet Mine Disposal Equipment was more fun but we only got to practice with that every couple of years.

I'm looking forward to joining you on a local dive soon.

Florida was fun. Dived at Blue Heron Bridge, the wrecks Lady Luck and Spiegel Grove, and reefs off Pompano Beach and Key Largo. We also did a cavern dive at Blue Water Springs.

Thanks for the info I'll look out for the upcoming dives. I had 3 great years at RNEC from '81-'84 - I had to go to see as my mess bill sometimes exceeded my wages!!

I’m guessing you went to the Cooper River with Sally and Tom Robinson of Charleston Scuba. Great people that always provide a great experience. I have found a few meg teeth over the years. It’s not my favorite diving but always worth the trip.

I went with a couple of different operations, neither Charleston Scuba. The 1st guy I went with was 13 years ago. His name was Tom but I'm fairly sure he would be out of the business by now. I'm not sure who the other folks in CHUM went with.

Hi Everyone,

Take a sec and introduce yourself here (when you do, please let us know how you found out about us).

I'm the VP of CHUM, and when I'm not scuba diving, I work in sales to support my dive habit.

The best place I've been diving so far is the Galapagos, and I'm looking forward to upcoming dives in Roatan, Mexico, and Missouri.

Next...
