Hi, I'm Claire. New to the group but not new to diving or to Houston! Certified in 1986 in Canyon Lake, did some other local diving (including Comal River) multiple trips to the Caribbean for about 5 yrs (eg Cozumel, Roatan, Grand Cayman) and California kelp beds then took some time off. Moved around a bunch (Texas - California - Texas - Illinois - Tennessee - Texas), started diving again in 2007 with a trip to French Polynesia. Since then, have been traveling with my dive buddies in the Chicago area (Cayman, Bonaire, Fiji, Grenada, Bonne Terre Mine, upcoming Red Sea in September!) and on my own at resorts and vacations (Bahamas, Jamaica, South Carolina) as well as with Gigglin Marlin (Cozumel). Been back in the Houston area for about 10 yrs. Looking to make more local diver friends and have some adventures! I plan to sign up for the Flower Gardens trip in May. Was booked to go there in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey hit. Thanks and see you in person soon at Jake's or on a trip!

Hi and welcome to the City of Houston Underwater Mariners Bulletin Board. CHUM is a social dive club of divers based in Houston, Texas.

CHUM meets every 3rd Thursday of the month (except for December) at Jake's Sports Bar on Chimney Rock. Usually we'll have a guest speaker, or some entertainment and beers and cheers. All are welcome. For those of you logging in from out of town, the forums are for anyone, anywhere, so feel free to register and join in.

Once you have registered, please take a few moments to tell us something about yourself by replying to this thread. If you're new to diving, we have some experienced folk here on the site who'll be happy to answer questions, and if you are an old hand, then we're happy to ask you questions!

Check out our Upcoming Events thread to find out about upcoming meetings, dive and social events. And be sure to check out the Welcome to CHUM page.
Hi everyone,
I went to one meeting last year and hope to be more involved. I have been diving since 1978. Former PADI instructor and current SSI instructor. Have been a volunteer diver at the aquarium in New Orleans and Denver. Happiest when breathing compressed air. Retired from teaching nursing 2 years ago and now just traveling the world looking for places to absorb some nitrogen. Looking forward to meeting new people

Welcome! Come join us at the monthly meeting on Thursday. A chance to meet more of the club, most of the officers will be there and there'll be announcements about upcoming events.
Meeting starts at 7pm (which is a little earlier than normal) but most folks start turning up and catching up after 6:30 or so. After brief announcements we'll be hearing from this month's guest speaker, Heather Knowles, who is a Fellow of the Explorer's Club. More details here.

Welcome aboard @indahgrady! Happy to have you here!

Keep an eye on the site and forums. Lots to do here with CHUM; monthly meetings, in-water outings, land-based outings, Dive Buddy board for partnering with others for local outings or farther afield, recommendations around travel, gear, etc.

Hope to see you at an event/outing soon!

Hi @indahgrady Glad you found us.
There is a club monthly meeting next Thursday 19th and the thread is here. This is a chance to meet some of the club members for some socializing. The focus is a presentation starting at 7am so getting there earlier pays off. Hope you see you at Jakes.

Greetings! New to CHUM. Not new to diving. Might have one of the older PADI certifications in the group (1990) combined with one of the lower total number of dives (not many ). I didn't dive at all for many, many years. Life happens! A couple of years ago I got the opportunity to dive in Belize and it renewed my love for scuba. It took some cajoling, but this spring I got the rest of the family to take the Open Water course, so now I'm looking to build some momentum by getting involved, finding some scuba-centric friends, and getting in the water as often as I can. See ya Thursday at Jake's!

Welcome! You're not alone in your extended hiatus from diving. I got certified in 1998, took a 17-year break, then started diving again in 2018. This club got me back in the water two days after my first meeting. Since then, I've done nearly 250 dives. I know we have a few other members with similar stories, so you're in good company! We're also going to Mammoth Lake on the 28th for cross-club event, so be sure to take a look at that.

Thanks! Sounds great! Coincidentally, we (the family) are already set up to be at Mammoth Lake on the 28th to do some practicing.

Hi Keith.

Hope to see you at a meeting or outing soon! This is a pretty active club and there's a fair bit to consider joining for both water and land-based outings...keep an eye on the website.

Come on out to Jake's this coming Thursday if your schedule allows or join by Zoom. There's a pretty solid speaker lined up as usual.

Welcome aboard!
